Mr Director

“That seemed heated” I jump from my chair, clutching on my chest, “You startled me, Mr Tate.” He watches me for a moment. He’s trying to figure out what that was all about. “Avery’s mum. I’m trying to get her to come..... she’s a difficult person, they are not close” “That’s why you’re Avery’s next of kin?” “yes!” Dr Matthews enters to room with a coffee in one hand and a bottle of water in the other “Here Sarah” handing the water out to me. “Richard, take a seat” “Can someone please tell me what’s going on? I’d really like to go be with Avery.” I sound a little impatient, but that’s to be expected “Avery was involved in a hit and run, just opposite the hospital. She’s suffered some extensive head injuries.” I look at Dr Matthews as I stand, backing towards the door. “I need to go see her.” “Please sit” Mr Tate orders, pointing me to my seat. “We need to go over some things in her file, just to make sure it's all in order. Anything she’s allergic to, medical issues, medications she may need. Being her next of kin, you will be responsible for treatment options unless her mother chooses to involve herself”. Dr. Matthews hands me some papers to fill out, but I’m too stressed to process what needs to go on them. “She’s not allergic to anything that I know of, I think!” Hold on.... “Silver, it makes her skin blister. She takes meds, I’m not sure what they’re called, I’ll have to find them at home.” “What are they for” “She doesn’t like people knowing, but I guess it’s important..... schizophrenia. She was diagnosed at 5 years old.” “5yo, that extremely young for such a diagnosis?” Mr Tate seems annoyed. Is it because she didn’t disclose this on her application? “Avery is in a coma” looking at me with sympathetic eyes, Dr Matthews continues “She’s suffered a fractured skill, and a bleed. She’s currently incubated”. I can’t breathe! “How bad is it? Is she going to wake up? I want to see her, NOW!” I’m losing what Patience I had left, I’m not sitting here for another moment. “She’s currently stable but critical. There is no answer as to when she’ll wake up, or if....., we just need to hope for some form of improvement” “Can I see her now, please?” I can hardly get my words out at this point. You have to be OK, Avery “Yes I’ll take you down, I need to start my rounds any way. But please prepare yourself, her face is badly swollen, stitches.....” “I understand!” I cut her off, drawing in a breath. I need to know. “Why the security guards?” A firm and powerful voice comes from across the room, making me tern to my left, “BECAUSE I PUT THEM THERE” Mr Tate’s face was hardened, his jaw clenched. I know just by his eyes, not to ask more questions. “follow me Sarah, I’ll walk you down” Dr. Matthews gives me a small smile and directs me towards the door.
