Wake up Avery

721 Words
“Do you mind....? What is the go with this security?” it doesn’t make any sense. Do you really need to stand at the end of the bed watching me. What..., you think I’m gonna stuff her in my handbag and sneak out with her?” This big Broad silent creature is just eyeing me, like I’m his next meal. I swear his eyes just flashed like gold. Did he just growl at me? “I’ll be waiting out side” His face held no emotions. “Right-e-o!” I’m really not understanding this whole situation. I watch him turn and leave the room, his shoulders just fitting through the door frame. Walking to her side, “Avery, I hope you can hear me” I’m holding her hand and see it's all scratched up. The constant beeping of the machines Echo in the room, ending the silence. “Everything will be OK, hay! You will be ok!” I walk to the end of the bed, checking her chart while tears well in my eyes. Avery is my sister, in the best way. We chose each other, we go beyond best friends. Walking back beside the bed, I sit in the only chair in the room. A hard, plastic chair with no padding, no arm rests. I can’t stop looking at all the tubes. Her face, Avery’s perfect face, its Unrecognisable. Her eyes are so swollen, she wouldn't be able to open them if she tried. “I hear you got the job. I can’t wait for our first shift together.” I choke on my words. Seeing her in this state is consuming. She’s been through enough. “You need to wake up, you hear me? Who am I going to throw shoes at if you're not around.” I lay my head on her shoulder, the tears I’m holding in, fight there way past my lashes, spilling to the bedding. “wake up” I whisper “EXCUSE ME MISS, YOU CANT GO IN THERE” “She’s my daughter. You can’t stop me from seeing her!” I’m startled awake by the yelling behind the door. looking at the wall clock, it’s 930am, I’ve been asleep for hours. “STAND BACK MISS, I don’t want to have to restrain you.” “Get out of the funking way” That’s Linda. She finally “found time.” Shocked I go and open the door. What the f**k? “Why are you holding a gun at Mrs Spencer” Why does this big tough man seem frightened of Linda. Looking between them both, I can understand the hostility, no one takes to Linda well, it’s like she naturally repels people, but holding a gun seems like an over reaction. “This is a hospital, put the dam thing down!” I demand...I’m left standing there, eyeing the stand off between Linda and the security guard. his eyes do glow! “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON DOWN HERE?” The authority is suffocating as Mr Tate runs down the hall. Why’s he here so early? The look in his face is dangerous. He stands by the guard, dominating “Who are you, and why are you here?” “I’m Linda Spencer. I’m Avery's mother.” Staring Mr Tate in the eyes, it’s like she wants to end his existence, and judging by his stance, the feeling is mutual. Placing his hand over the guards gun, “lower it!” He orders with hesitation. With glowing eyes, his deathly gaze burns through Linda, “I guess we need to talk.” Mr Tate turns to address me, “Miss O’Malley. Perhaps it’s time for you to head home!” I don’t think that was a suggestion, but an order. “Ok Mr Tate. But I’ll be back this evening, I hope to help with her care, I’ve taken the week off of work to stay with her.” His eyes soften as he turns to me, “We’ll see you later then.” I walk back into the room and grab my bag. I feel I Have to run out of here, not walk. This, The security, The gun, Mr Tate being overly protective. There’s more too all this and I’m not privy to any of it.
