Really Mum

436 Words
Walking through the car park, I pull out my phone. I open the photo gallery, and scroll through to a photo of dad and I. Sitting on the balcony, playing snap with an old set of playing cards. “I miss you dad” I whisper. Dad was my rock. No matter what, he was always there to give me that extra love, I never got from mum. The day he passed, was the day a part of me died. Some times I wish it were mum who was ripped apart by that pack of wolves...! Dad was always the first person I’d call with good news, ANY NEWS.....! With a deep sigh, I open the contacts and look for mums number. I hesitate for a moment before I press call. “WHAT?” “Nice way to answer the phone mother” sarcasm poring from my mouth “sorry Avery, I thought it was some one else” that was a tad blunt! “I had a job interview today, I’m now a paediatric nurse at Smithsview memorial hospital” I wait for her reply, all I want is to hear some sort of excitement in her voice... “mum?” “sorry What? Sorry I wasn’t listening” of course she wasn’t “I got a job mum” “oh! Yah that’s great sweet heart.... um! Your meds? you haven’t picked them up” “yes mum, I have enough to get me through to next month, you don’t have to keep filling my scripts, I've moved out, it’s time I did that myself” mum mumbles something under her breath “ it’s just easier if I fill it when I get my own scripts. Just please make sure you take them, ok?” “yes mum, you don’t have to ride me about it” “It’s important you take them Avery” “for f**k sake mum, I’m a nurse, I know how important my meds are” Just once I’d like to have a conversation with her that didn’t involve my “crazy” “You’re a schizophrenic Avery!” like I need a reminder! I pull the phone from my ear, stare at it for a moment and end the call....fuck mum! Just fuck....! In a haze of frustration and glassy eyes I storm across the car park towards the Cafe across the road, time for a hit of caffeine to clam my nerves... why mum has to remind me at every moment that I’m crazy. It’s like a stab in the eye she enjoys to inflict on me.
