The crash from downstairs was loud enough to shake the cabin. Kaia turned toward the sound before she even realized she had moved. Glass shattered somewhere below them, followed by the sharp crack of splintering wood, and then a growl rolled through the house so deep and unfamiliar that every instinct inside her snapped awake at once. Beside her, Rowan was already moving. Whatever conversation they had been having on the porch was gone in an instant. He shoved the cabin door open and stepped inside first, his shoulders tense and his attention locked on the darkness below. “Stay behind me.” Kaia followed him anyway.
