Chapter 18

No More Warnings The first man reached her a second before the other did. Kaia pivoted on instinct, her body turning smoothly as his hand shot toward her arm. His fingers barely brushed her sleeve before she caught his wrist and redirected the force past her instead of meeting it head-on. Momentum carried him forward hard enough that his shoulder slammed into her side when she twisted away, but she used it, driving her elbow sharply into his ribs before shoving him off balance. The sound he made was more surprise than pain. Good. That meant they still expected her to hesitate. Gravel shifted violently beneath their feet as the second man closed in from her left, faster than the first and heavier through the shoulders, the kind of fighter who relied on force over speed. Kaia barely had time to duck before his arm swept toward her head. The movement cut through the air hard enough that she felt it pass over her hair as she dropped low and drove forward instead of back, slamming into his center before he could reset his footing. All three of them stumbled together for half a second, boots tearing through dirt and loose stone. The clearing exploded into motion after that. The quiet that had been hanging over the abandoned property shattered under the sounds of movement-boots grinding into gravel, sharp breaths, bodies colliding hard enough to echo against the old structure behind them. Somewhere off to the side, one of the warped boards groaned under the sudden vibration, the sound splintering through the air like the place itself was reacting to the violence breaking loose in front of it. Kaia twisted free before either of them could fully recover, breathing harder now but still steady, her focus splitting cleanly between both men as they circled back toward her. Neither looked relaxed anymore. That calm from earlier was gone. Now they looked irritated. Dangerous. The man she had hit first straightened slowly, dragging a hand across his side with a grimace before his attention snapped back to her. "You really want to do this the hard way?" Kaia let out a breath through her nose, brushing dirt from her sleeve without taking her eyes off him. "You people keep acting like there was another option." The larger man moved first this time, angling toward her again with enough speed to force her backward. Kaia sidestepped before he could corner her properly, but the second one adjusted fast, cutting across her escape route in a way that made it obvious they'd done this together before. Coordinated. Not random muscle. That mattered. Kaia felt it immediately in the way they moved around each other, one pushing while the other closed space, forcing her to keep turning instead of settling into a clean position. The clearing suddenly felt smaller than it had minutes ago, the abandoned structure at her back no longer just scenery but an obstacle she had to keep accounting for every time she shifted. Another grab. Another dodge. Her shoulder clipped rough wood as she twisted away from the larger man's grip, pain sparking sharply down her arm before adrenaline swallowed most of it. She barely registered it before reacting again, driving the heel of her hand into the first man's jaw hard enough to snap his head sideways. He stumbled back with a curse. Kaia didn't wait. She moved immediately, fast enough to force distance before they regrouped, her chest rising harder now as her boots slid through loose dirt near the edge of the clearing. The trees pressed dark and dense around them, the forest silent in a way that made the entire place feel cut off from the rest of the world. No witnesses. No interruptions. Exactly how they wanted it. Her gaze flicked toward the man who still hadn't joined the fight. He remained where he'd been from the start, watching everything unfold with the same controlled stillness that had put her on edge earlier. His arms hung loosely at his sides, posture relaxed enough to look detached if not for the sharpness in his eyes tracking every movement she made. That bothered her more than the others. Because he wasn't surprised. Not by her fighting back. Not by how far this had already gone. Like he'd expected this exact outcome from the moment she stepped into the clearing. Kaia's breathing slowed deliberately as she straightened again, forcing herself to settle instead of letting the adrenaline pull too hard at her reactions. The two men in front of her spread slightly this time instead of charging immediately, more cautious now than before. One wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. The other rolled his shoulder once, eyes narrowing. "You could still walk away from this," the first man said, though the strain in his voice suggested he already knew how useless the offer sounded. Kaia barked out a short laugh before she could stop it. "That's funny coming from the people who followed me across half the territory." His jaw tightened. "You don't understand what's coming." "No," Kaia shot back, her gaze sharpening. "I understand exactly enough." The clearing went still again for half a second. Then the larger man lunged. Kaia reacted instantly, twisting sideways as his momentum tore past her. She caught his arm as he moved, using the turn to slam him hard into the side of the abandoned structure. Rotten wood cracked violently under the impact, the entire wall shaking hard enough to send dust raining down from the roof. The sound echoed through the clearing. Too loud. Too sharp. Everyone froze. Kaia felt it immediately. Not fear. Recognition. The man who had stayed back finally moved, his attention snapping toward the damaged wall as something unreadable crossed his expression for the first time since she'd arrived. And suddenly- everything changed. Because whatever was inside that building... they hadn't wanted touched.
