10 Amber I tugged the fur coat tighter around me as I walked through the garden. The stone paths weaving alongside the hundreds of leafless, ice-topped trees had been cleared of snow, but the rest of the estate was plain white. I stopped by a large area where many of the paths met, where a light gray stone fountain stood. The sculpture in the center was of a child fae reaching up with both hands, cupping a crescent moon. There was no water in it, only crystal-clear ice. Even so, the fountain was beautiful, powerful. Like everything else in this land. Like the king of this land. I hadn’t seen Cade since he left me at that tower beside the marketplace the day before. Last night, I had asked Tania, one of my handmaids, if she had heard about Cade, but she said he hadn’t come back yet.
