Owen chose several wedding dresses for me. "Go try them on. You'll look beautiful in these."
I followed the store assistant into the fitting room without a word. When I used the excuse of stepping out to grab my bag, Owen was already gone, exactly as I expected.
"Mr. Parker said he needed to use the restroom."
I nodded. "Perfect. I need to fix my makeup anyway."
A "Restroom Closed" sign was propped up outside the door. But it didn't hide the muffled sounds drifting from the stall. If anything, they turned my stomach.
I stepped inside and heard Grace's voice.
"She slapped me, and you still made me apologize to her?"
She sounded more pouty than angry. The rest of her words dissolved into muffled murmurs, swallowed by a heated kiss. A long moment later, Owen's voice finally broke the silence, low and husky.
"She was upset because I missed her fitting yesterday. A slap isn't a big deal. Consider it me making it up to her. Come on, getting worked up isn't good for the baby."
Grace gave Owen a light shove.
"You actually know stress isn't good for the baby? Then where exactly are your hands right now?"
Owen chuckled under his breath. Then, as if something suddenly crossed his mind, he asked,
"Last Wednesday, when you stayed at my place, did you take the bracelet from my nightstand?"
The second those words left his mouth, my hands curled into fists.
Last Wednesday, the rooftop door had slammed shut and locked behind me because of the wind. When I called him for help, he kept telling me he was stuck at a business dinner. Not wanting to ruin his plans, I stayed alone on that freezing rooftop in my thin pajamas for five miserable hours, shaking from the cold. So while I was barely holding on up there, they were in my home, on my wedding bed, tangled together.
"Give the bracelet back. Emma made it for me herself with her mother's old keepsake." Owen's tone turned unusually stern.
Grace scoffed. "It's nothing but a cheap trinket. Only Emma would treat something like that as a treasure. I'll return it, but the limited edition necklace you promised her? I want that instead."
Owen didn't even pause. "Alright."
That necklace was the one Owen promised me when he proposed. There was only one in the entire world. He told me it represented the one and only love he had for me.
The necklace was truly unique.
But his love clearly wasn't.
"You agreed that easily? Aren't you worried Emma will be upset?" Grace asked.
Owen didn't care in the slightest. "She doesn't understand jewelry anyway. I'll have a craftsman make a copy for her later. As long as you don't parade it around, she won't notice. Consider it a gift for our baby."
So that was all I was in Owen's eyes. A fool he could easily deceive.
A wave of disgust surged through me. I couldn't stop myself from gagging.
The sound alerted the people inside the stall. Grace was the first to walk out. Her lipstick was smeared, and the straps of her top sat crookedly on her shoulders. The neckline dipped low, barely hiding the marks left by their kisses.
The nausea hit me even harder. I grabbed the sink and coughed violently.
Grace leaned against the restroom door, a mocking smile playing on her lips. Her voice was filled with fake concern. "Oh, Ms. Carter, why do you look so sick? Don't tell me you're pregnant?"
She walked over and gently patted my back. The moment her hand touched me, my stomach turned even more. I spun around and knocked her hand away.
Grace paused for a beat, then leaned in close enough for only me to hear.
"Silly me. Mr. Parker may adore his wife, but what good is a wife who can't give him a baby? Face it. You'll never be anybody's mother."
She let out a low, mocking laugh. It echoed in my ears and dragged me right back into the nightmare I had fought so hard to forget...
