I could have been a mother.
A year ago, I was carrying Owen's baby. But his female secretary showed up at my door and ended up pushing me down the stairs. My injuries were so severe that my poor baby, only three months old, never even had the chance to enter this world.
That wasn't the only thing I lost. The doctor who operated on me told me that my body had suffered serious damage, and getting pregnant again would be almost impossible. Back then, I was shattered.
Owen knelt beside my hospital bed, drowning in guilt and begging for my forgiveness. He swore he would never hurt me again. He said he had only been drunk that night and that his secretary had taken advantage of the situation. He kept slapping himself, blaming himself for failing to protect me and our baby.
Owen made me a promise.
"We won't have kids anymore. I'll give you all the love I would've given our child."
Back then, he kissed my fingertips, his eyes filled with love and regret. He abandoned everything else to take care of me, staying by my side and taking me on trips to help me forget the pain.
Back then, I really believed him. I believed that after going through something so devastating, he would never betray me. I believed what happened between him and his secretary was nothing more than a drunken mistake. I believed he would give me the love he once wanted to give our child. I believed that as long as we had each other, we would be enough.
But now, the same man who had sworn he would never hurt me was the one breaking those promises with another woman. And Grace was carrying his baby.
"You finally know, don't you?" Grace suddenly said. "Your fiancé has been in my bed for a long time. And I'm pregnant."
She grabbed my hand and pressed it against her slightly swollen stomach.
A wave of cold swept through my entire body. I tried to pull away on instinct, but she only held on tighter.
"What are you trying to do?" I stared at her.
Grace wasn't in a hurry. She only smiled calmly. "Tell me, who do you think matters more? You, or the baby inside me?"
The moment she finished speaking, a cruel smile spread across her face. Then she shoved me hard.
I staggered back a few steps, but Grace screamed and fell to the floor like she had been thrown.
The restroom door burst open the second Owen heard her scream.
"Grace? Grace!"
He rushed out in panic. Without even thinking, he shoved me aside and sent me crashing to the floor. My head hit the ceramic edge of the sink with a sickening thud. Something warm trickled down my face. I touched it, and my fingers came away covered in red.
The last thing I saw before blacking out was Owen lifting Grace into his arms and carrying her away in a panic.
When I woke up again, the sharp scent of disinfectant filled the air. The only person in the room was an intern nurse.
She held her phone in one hand, watching a soap opera, while using the other to wipe at the wound on my forehead.
Her touch was careless and rough.
The sharp sting made me gasp.
The young nurse only clicked her tongue, looking annoyed. "You're so dramatic. Someone's already looking after you, so stop acting like this. Mr. Parker brought Mrs. Parker to the hospital, and all the top specialists rushed over for her. If Mr. Parker hadn't casually mentioned you, nobody would even be paying attention."
She quickly applied some medicine and wrapped the wound, still complaining under her breath.
"Everyone says Mr. Parker is the perfect husband. Tsk, Mrs. Parker only fell down, but his face went completely white. He was terrified something would happen to the baby inside Mrs. Parker."
As I listened to the nurse ramble on, a dull ache settled deep in my chest, eclipsing the sting in my forehead.
"Get out."
The nurse looked unwilling to move. "You're ordering me around now?"
She flicked the cotton swab in her hand straight at my face. "Who do you think wants to deal with you? You're just some servant from the Parker family, aren't you? Stay in your lane. Don't put on airs like some rich man's wife!"
Before I could say anything, Owen walked into the ward.
