Aria's days passed slowly, but she knew Marcus was working on a plan to help her escape. She saw him whenever he could sneak away, and he would whisper bits of information and encouragement.
One day, Marcus arrived at her cell looking more anxious than usual. "Tonight's the night," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The king's attending a banquet in the great hall, and most of the guards will be distracted. I'll come for you during the feast. Be ready."
Aria's heart skipped a beat. Tonight? She felt a mix of excitement and fear.
Marcus handed her a small package. "Take this," he said. "It's food and water for the journey. You'll need it."
Aria took the package, her fingers brushing against Marcus's. "Thank you," she said, her voice filled with gratitude.
Marcus smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Just be safe," he said. "I'll meet you at the passageway. We'll make our way out together."
As the night wore on, Aria heard the distant sounds of music and laughter. The banquet had begun. She paced back and forth in her cell, her heart pounding in her chest.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of footsteps outside her cell. The door creaked open, and Marcus stood there, a look of determination on his face.
"It's time," he said. "Let's go."
Aria's heart soared. She was one step closer to freedom.
Aria's eyes locked onto Marcus's, searching for any sign of deceit. But all she saw was a deep sadness and a hint of kindness. She nodded slowly, her mind racing with possibilities.
"What do you propose?" she asked, her voice a little softer.
Marcus glanced around nervously before stepping closer to the cell. "I can help you escape," he said. "But it won't be easy. We'll need to be careful, and we'll need a solid plan. I've been thinking about this for a while now, and I think I can get you out of here without being detected."
Aria's heart skipped a beat. Escape? It was a tantalizing prospect.
"How?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Marcus hesitated, his eyes darting around the corridor. "I'll need to get you out of this cell first," he said. "Then, we'll make our way to the east wing. There's a passageway hidden behind the tapestries. It's narrow and treacherous, but it's our best chance."
Aria's mind was racing. A passageway? Could it be her ticket to freedom?
"What's in it for you?" she asked, her eyes narrowing. "Why would you risk helping me?"
Marcus's expression turned somber. "I've seen what the king's done to people," he said. "I've seen the suffering, the pain. And I know you're not like the others. You have a spark in you that refuses to be extinguished. I want to help you because I believe you deserve a chance to be free."
Aria's heart swelled with gratitude. Maybe, just maybe, Marcus was the ally she needed.
Aria studied Marcus's face, searching for any sign of deception. But all she saw was sincerity and determination. She nodded slowly, her mind made up.
"Okay," she said. "I'll trust you. But we need to be careful. If the king finds out, he'll kill us both."
Marcus nodded, a small smile on his face. "I know," he said. "I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe. But we need to move quickly. The king's been increasing the guards' rotations, and it's getting harder to move around undetected."
Aria nodded, her heart racing with excitement and fear. She knew that escaping the palace wouldn't be easy, but with Marcus's help, she might just have a chance.
"When do we start?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Marcus glanced around the corridor, his eyes scanning the shadows. "Tonight," he said. "I'll come for you during the night watch. Be ready."
Aria nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. Tonight? She felt a surge of anticipation and fear.
As Marcus turned to leave, Aria called out to him. "Wait," she said.
Marcus turned back, his eyes questioning. "What is it?" he asked.
Aria hesitated, unsure of how to ask. "Why are you doing this?" she said finally. "What's in it for you?"
Marcus's expression turned somber. "I've seen what the king's become," he said. "I've seen the suffering he's caused. And I know that you're not just any prisoner. You're a chance for things to change. You're a chance for the kingdom to be free."
Aria's eyes locked onto Marcus's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. She knew that she had found an ally, someone who was willing to risk everything to help her.
As Marcus left, Aria's mind was racing with thoughts of freedom and possibility. She paced back and forth in her cell, her heart pounding with excitement and fear. Tonight, she would make her escape. Tonight, she would take back control of her life.
The hours ticked by slowly, but Aria was ready. She had eaten the bread and water Marcus had brought her, and she had used the time to rest and prepare herself for the journey ahead.
As the night watch approached, Aria heard the sound of footsteps outside her cell. She stood up straight, her heart pounding in her chest. It was time.
The door creaked open, and Marcus stood there, a look of determination on his face. "It's time," he said, his voice low. "Let's go."
Aria nodded, and Marcus led her out of the cell. They moved quickly and silently through the corridors, avoiding the guards and dodging the shadows.
As they reached the east wing, Marcus stopped and pressed a hidden button. The tapestry swung open, revealing a narrow passageway.
"This is it," Marcus said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "This is our way out."
Aria's heart soared as she stepped into the passageway. She was one step closer to freedom. But as she looked back at Marcus, she saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Marcus hesitated, his eyes darting around the passageway. "I didn't tell you everything," he said. "There's something you need to know before we go any further."
Aria's heart sank, her mind racing with possibilities. What could Marcus possibly have left out? She leaned in closer, her voice urgent. "What is it?" she asked.
Marcus took a deep breath before speaking. "The passageway leads to a network of tunnels beneath the palace. It's dark, and it's treacherous. We'll have to move quickly and quietly to avoid detection."
Aria nodded, her determination renewed. "I'm ready," she said. "Let's do this."
Marcus nodded, a small smile on his face. "Okay," he said. "But there's more. Once we're in the tunnels, we'll be heading towards the river. We'll have to swim to get out of the palace grounds."
Aria's eyes widened, but she didn't hesitate. "I'm a strong swimmer," she said. "I can do it."
Marcus nodded, his eyes filled with admiration. "I knew you were brave," he said. "But there's one more thing. Once we're out of the palace, we'll be on our own. We'll have to find a safe place to hide, and we'll have to be careful not to get caught."
Aria's heart was racing, but she was determined. She knew that freedom wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to take the risk.
"Let's go," she said, her voice firm.
Marcus nodded, and together they stepped into the passageway, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
