Chapter 5

Eunice had investigated what brought John to Jaon Nigeria Limited when she first appeared at the company with Joe. She was afraid John might have an ulterior motive. She confirmed from her friend, Lizzy - an IT and legal analyst that he came to the company to visit his friend.

“Hi Lizzy! I want you to investigate what transpired between Joe and Isabella in the past,” she spoke on phone.

“Okay, I will do just that for you but it will take some time,” she assured.

After three days of digging deeper, the result of the investigation came out.

The investigation revealed that Isabella was Joe's ex-girlfriend when he was still living a care-free lifestyle. Their relationship came to an end when Isabella falsely pinned a controversial pregnancy on Joe. Later, the paternity of the child was tested and traced to John, the ex-fiance of Eunice.

Eunice was in a complicated mood when she found out. She became depressed. She was confused.

“So, John had a relationship with Isabella which led to pregnancy during their dating period. Which meant that John had been a betrayer and a wicked soul. No wonder he was in an urge to play the game of love with me. I thank God that I refused. Joe is innocent in this matter. You are doomed for it, John!” She muttered angrily.

Eunice was fulfilled that she could say between the two who to rely upon. But at the same time, she assured herself to be careful and watchful.

Isabella knew whose father the child was but because John had disappeared in thin air, he pinned the pregnancy on Joe.

Over the years, Isabella had been in search of Joe but to no avail to inform him about the result of the pregnancy which birthed Afna.

This morning, Eunice and Joe were in the company. Suddenly, there was a commotion at the gate of the company.

Isabella had received a message from an anonymous person informing her about the whereabouts of Joe. The address was given in the message and straight away, she acted on it impulsively.

“Come out! This useless man. Your son is here. Having had an affair with me which led to a pregnancy, you dumped me and ran away. You think I will not be able to locate you. A fool!” She ranted.

“What is that?” Eunice asked.

“Don't worry, I will take care of it,” Joe responded.

At the gate, Joe was surprised to see Isabella with a little boy.

“How did you get to know that I am here?” Joe asked.

“You are a fool! You left me alone with your son and ran away. This is the result of the game we played,” she ranted again and again.

The mouth of everyone at the company was wide open. The gossip of the development had spread like a wild fire among the workers in the company.

Suddenly, Eunice rushed out of the boardroom to the gate where Joe was, to salvage the situation.

Joe was afraid of what would be the reaction of Eunice on sighting her appearance at the gate.

To his surprise, she was calm and confident to protect Joe.

“I know you. You are Isabella Frank. Your claim is false. It is not true,” she said.

At this juncture, everybody was all ear to listen to the story.

“Please, can you tell me about your relationship with John Obey? Take a look at the child. Does he resemble the person you claimed to be his father? Have you not done the paternity test of the child before? You know for yourself that the child belongs to him. Therefore, your claim is not true,” she concluded and left. She headed to her residential house without waiting for Joe to give her a ride.

Everybody was silent. The gossip being peddled around fizzled out immediately.

Isabella became defeated and left the company shamefully.

In the office, Joe began to marvel at the maturity and proactiveness of Eunice in handling the development. The more he pondered, the he developed emotional feelings for her. At least, she had saved him. She had played the part of deal of the contract.

“How did she get to know all this? This girl must be powerful and have a link with powerfully external forces. She must not be joked with,” he said with fear.

After the close of the day, Joe drove directly to her house. He was afraid what her mood and reaction could be on seeing her. This was because she left the company instantly without saying a word to him.

“I am sorry for what happened today at the gate of the company,” he apologized.

“Don't worry. I have already investigated this matter. You are innocent,” she said.

“You just need to be careful and don't belittle yourself again,” she added.

Hearing this, Joe felt remorseful for having lived a care-free lifestyle which almost ruined his future.

“John Obey that I mentioned at the gate of the company was my ex, I told you about that broke up with me deliberately without giving a genuine explanation. He was the one that told me that you had a relationship with Isabella. So, I swung into action to investigate the matter where I found out that you were innocent,” she revealed.

“One thing is sure. There may be a mole in your company or somewhere feeding this guy some information aimed at blackmailing you and sabotaging your company,” she added.

“This means that there are enemies somewhere lurking to target my company and my reputation,” he said.

“But, in the first place, I expected you to have told me about your past as part of the contract so that I will know where to come in to help peradventure you had a mistake in the past,” she advised.

“I think we must be on the watch for these enemies,” he said.
