The doctors and nurses quickly led Layla towards the operating theatre. A nurse stopped John at the door.
“You wait outside,”
The door to the operating theatre slowly closed, and the red light came on. John sat down on a chair in the corridor of the nursing home. Silence surrounded him, broken only by the ticking of the clock.
John’s mind kept replaying Layla’s smile, her gentle voice and the small moments they had spent together. Each memory seemed to push his heart harder. John silently prayed with folded hands,
“Oh God, heal my Layla… don’t take her away from me.”
Time seemed to stand still. Every minute seemed like an hour. John’s mind was filled with pain, fear and restlessness. He closed his eyes and imagined Layla’s face over and over again. Her smile, her words, the moments of happiness they had shared together.
Suddenly, the door to the operating theatre slowly opened. A doctor came out. John stood up quickly, his chest pounding.
“Doctor… how is Laila?” A sense of fear emerged in his voice.
The doctor was silent for a moment, looking at John. Those few seconds of silence seemed like an eternity to John. His chest was pounding as if it would never stop, and countless feelings of fear and anxiety were gathering in his eyes.
Finally, the doctor said slowly,
“Are you the lady’s husband?”
John nodded quickly.
“I am John… Laila’s husband. Doctor, how is Laila’s condition now?”
The doctor sighed.
“We tried our best. We were able to provide treatment in time, so Laila is now out of danger. However, she has lost a lot of blood from her body, so she will have to be kept under special observation for a few more days. But… I have to say with sadness that it was not possible to save the baby. Laila will never be able to be a mother again. Please forgive me.”
As the doctor finished speaking, the surroundings suddenly fell silent. Everything seemed to be covered in darkness before John's eyes. His heart pounded, his chest felt an unbearable pressure.
John stood silently for a moment, as if the words had not reached his ears properly. All the moments of the past few months flashed before his eyes. Laila's smiles, small dreams, and the moments of joy they shared.
John slowly sat down on the chair placed against the wall and covered his face with both hands and remained silent for a moment. Tears rolled silently from the corners of his eyes. The doctor said softly,
“I understand that this is very difficult for you. But the most important thing right now is to take care of Laila. She is very weak. You have to be strong.”
John slowly raised his head. His eyes were red, but he was trying to control himself.
“Doctor, can I see her for a moment?”
The doctor nodded.
“Yes, but don’t talk too much. She hasn’t fully regained consciousness yet.”
After a while, a nurse took John to the front of the isolation ward. On the other side of the glass door, Laila was lying on the bed. Her face was pale, a needle of saline in her hand. John’s chest began to throb, seeing Laila in that weak state.
He slowly stood up by the bed. Gently took Laila’s hand in his. Laila’s eyelids moved slightly, and she slowly opened her eyes. A soft smile spread across her lips as she saw John in front of her.
John quietly held her hand. “Everything will be okay, Laila. I’m here,” she said to herself. The mist in Laila’s eyes suddenly began to lighten, and she slowly looked at John.
The doctor said, “Her condition is stable now, but your presence and loving touch will help her recover quickly.”
John silently held Laila's hand, and there was a mixture of cold fear and calm in his voice. "You'll be okay, Laila. I'm with you. Everything will be okay."
Tears welled up in Laila's eyes, but she slowly began to smile. For John, it was a strange mixture of calm and calm. Such a moment of peace after fear and pain.
The heavy breathing and the beating of her heart slowly brought peace back between them. John realized that sometimes life took such unexpected turns. Pain also comes, but even in that pain there is a glimmer of hope.
The pain of losing John's newborn child had broken his heart, but Laila's life had been saved. John decided that from this moment on, he would be strong for Laila, comfort her, and slowly restore a new normality.
The two of them looked at each other in silence. The silence seemed no longer to be frightening. Peace flowed between the chair and the bed. John thought that was all that mattered right now, to be by Laila's side, to hold her hand, and to be strong before she gave up hope.
Laila slowly turned to face John, and her eyes sparkled with gratitude and love. John smiled softly, his eyes still red, but his heart calm. Life was preparing to begin anew.
