Mallory looked from Deneg to the tree then back again. She wasn’t sure how to help either of them. But the wandering soul sounded desperate and surely Deneg could wait until night to leave the cave. “What if you wait with Emica while we see what the wandering soul needs?”
“How long do you expect me to wait?” Deneg demanded. “My brother has already waited long enough. I don’t even know if he still lives. Or, if he does live, for how much longer he’ll be able to survive.”
