We pull up to the only Bar on this street. It is a dark hole in the wall, so to say. We park in the side parking lot. I am still a little sore but moving much better than I have in the last few days.
"Are you ok? "Kaden says.
“Yeah, I am fine; I just really want to solve this case”.
"I really appreciate everything you are doing to help."
“I appreciate the opportunity to help.”
"Let’s go see what we can find out."
“Okay”
We enter the bar and take two empty seats at the bar. Kaden orders both of us a beer and then shows the bartender a picture of Amy and asks if he has seen her in here before.
He shakes his head yes, “I’ve seen her in here a few times but she hasn’t been in for a while. She must have found her a husband or something. Why are you looking for her, anyway?"
"Well, let’s just say she didn’t find a husband."
"Mind if I ask you a question?" Lexi says.
“Shoot”
"Do you remember who she was with when she was here last?"
“Yeah, a pretty girl at first then some guy came in and she danced with him all night, I thought they both left with him.”
"What did this man look like?"
“Dark hair, weird eyes, tall and big, big like your friend here.”
Kaden popped his neck at that like it irritated him.
"Okay, uh."
“Ron is the name; hey, if you all need anything just let me know I’m here four nights a week”.
"Thank you, Ron."
"We will."
Kaden looks at me and says. "We're looking at the wrong place."
“How do you know”
"I can’t tell you, you just need to trust me on this."
“Okay Kaden, you’re the boss but we have a great lead.”
"Yeah we do and there are things you don’t know yet."
“I have read the case file over and over; I doubt there is much I don’t know about the case so far.”
"Lexi, there are things out there in these mountains that you can’t even imagine."
“Like what, Kaden? If I were you I wouldn’t try to scare the only person helping you on this case.”
"I’m not trying to scare you Lexi, I am trying to tell you there are things you know nothing about and if we are not careful, you could get hurt."
“I’ve already been hurt.”
"No you recovered from a few bumps and bruises, Things could have been much worse."
“Why don’t you just tell me what you’re talking about?”
"You’re not ready yet."
"Really, I think to myself, I’m not ready? What the hell? Kaden really is an asshole.
“So what am I ready for?”
"Look, I’m sorry I’m acting like this, but it really is for your own good."
“Okay, first I decide what’s good for me and what’s not. Second, you are my boss not my father, you don’t get to decide for me.”
"You are correct on both points but I pay your health insurance so I get a say so."
“Wait, I have health insurance?”
Smiling, he says "You do now."
I pierce my lips knowing what he just did.
"Oh come on Lexi, don’t be made I just want all my employees to stay safe."
“I’m not mad, just aggravated. As a child my parents made all my decisions for me and then when I turned 18 up and moved out leaving me to fend for myself. Had I had the opportunity to learn and make my own mistakes it would have prepared me for being an adult; Sometimes ignorance is not bliss.”
"Trust me in this case it is for now."
“I guess I don’t have a choice since you are dead set on keeping the mystery just that. But just so you know I am a damn good investigator.”
"You also investigate what I tell you too."
"Okay, Okay. I will let it go for now. But just know I will need all the information at some point if you really want this case solved.”
Suddenly I knew I had gone too far. Kaden didn’t like what I just said. His eyes turned a dark black color which he quickly tried to hide. I thought I also heard him growl. I felt uneasy being in his presence and honestly I was scared. I quickly try to take it back but he ignores me.
"Just finish your drink, it’s time to go."
We pay the tab and head for the car. I think back on the woman at the apartment building and stop in my tracks.
“Kaden; since I am better and moving around mostly on my own, I can stay at my apartment tonight.”
"Nonsense, I said I would take care of you until you are fully healed."
“It’s really ok, I can take care of myself.”
"I know you can, Lexi; but it was my fault you got hurt in the first place."
“Fine, I will stay a few more nights Kaden.”
I didn’t really trust staying with him any longer after I royally pissed him off. And why do his eyes change like that? My mind is running a mile a minute. I stay quiet for the ride home. Wait, Home? This is not my home. I stayed quiet for the ride to Kaden’s house. When he pulls into the garage, I open my door and get out of the car limping just a little leaving my crutches behind I go to the door and wait for him to unlock it. After he does, I go straight to the room where I am sleeping. I hurry over to the dresser to my few clothing items and choose something to sleep in and head for the shower. I turn the water on as hot as I can stand it and enter. AS I am standing in the stream of hot water, I reflect on the day. The interviews went well; I really like Kaden’s sister and dad. I don’t care for his aunt. But that is beside the point. It pissed Kaden off when I insinuated he didn’t really want the case solved. I face palm myself and want to slap my own face for doing that. I know he wants to solve the case. I need to talk to Kaden.
I finish with my shower and head downstairs to hopefully talk to Kaden to hopefully give him my apology for what I said at the bar. He is nowhere to be found. I assume he has already turned in for this night so I sit in the living room and watch television. The news is on and not much interesting is being reported so I find a comedy movie to watch, hopeful it will get my mind off of my mistake. I lie down on the couch watching the movie and must have fallen asleep at some point because I am jarred awake by something hitting the door. My first instinct was to scream for Kaden, but he never showed. I ran up the stairs to his room and he wasn’t there either. Shaking, I go to the garage door to peek out only to find Kaden’s car gone. Great, he isn’t even here and someone is trying to get into the house. I can hear them banging on the front door. Then I hear something I never thought I would ever hear again, a growl, one that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on edge. Surely this isn’t the wolf that attacked me in the woods here to finish what it started. Do dogs even do that? I am terrified and at this point I am crawling around on the floor trying not to be seen by whatever is on the other side of the door. Suddenly I ear glass shatter and hear something large walking around inside the house. I am almost to the kitchen when something grabs hold of the back of my neck lifting me off the floor but just before I could tell who or what had a hold of me I go unconscious.
