New Position

I wake to the alarm, its 5 am Monday morning. I roll over trying to get just a few more minutes of sleep when Lisa comes barreling through my bedroom door.

"Rise and shine you have a big day ahead of you!" She screams as I groan.

"Can you please just keep it down and let me sleep."

"No!" She says as she grabs the blanket and jerks it off the bed.

"Come on I have the perfect thing for you to wear."

I lazily roll out of bed and pad into the shower. I quickly shower and quickly step out. Lisa is reentering the room with a nice black pants suit with a nice pint under shirt.

"Here she says, I bought this for you over the weekend. I wanted you to have a new suit to wear on your first day."

"Wow! Thanks Lisa. I love it." I grab it and quickly put it on.

I stand surveying my reflection and I feel pleased. I actually look like a professional. I smile and finish my look with hair and makeup.

I am nervous as we enter the building at 6:45am, I quickly make my way to Mr. Lance’s office I hope I am here first but as I open the door I see him sitting at his desk looking at his watch as to see if I am late.

I smile and say "good morning Mr. Lance."

"Didn’t I tell you to call me Kaden?" He says with a raised brow.

"Oh um, Yeah sorry. Good morning Kaden."

"Good morning to you as well Lexi."

"So what will be working on today?"

"Today not too much, we are going to get to know each other and learn a little bit about each other’s work ethic. We will need to learn to be in sync with each other if we are going to partner with each other for this case."

"Ok" I say with a questioned look.

He then says. "I am going to be bringing you into a world of well unimaginable things and I will need to know if you can handle it before I do."

"So this is more like a second interview."

He smiles "No Lex;i you have the job I am just being cautious and I don’t want to scare you off on your first day."

"Ok," I nod.

"So shall we begin with what your thoughts are on the recent attacks up in the mountains?"

"Honestly I think it is animal attacks. Do you think it could be something else I pry?"

"No I think it is animal attacks just not the kind of animals you think it is."

I start to question him, but quickly change my mind when he hands me a folder. I open it and my eyes widen. It is a picture of a woman’s body.

"I hope you are ok with this kind of work Lexi." I shake my head quickly and start my evaluation as I know that is what he expects.

"I see that she is fully dressed, she has deep wounds on her face and neck area that look like maybe a bear or a cat clawed her. I finish with She also has tear stains on her cheeks, and a silver neckless lays under her right foot just beneath the dirt, you can barely see it."

He quickly stands and looks at the photo. "Hum your right I didn’t see that."

He smiles great catch. "So grab your coat were going on a field trip."

We hurry out of his office so fast I couldn’t even ask where we were going so I just followed like a good little employee. I am usually a talker but for some reason around Mr. um Kaden I am too nervous. I follow him to the parking garage where he leads me to a black range rover with dark tented windows much like the other auto I saw him in at my apartment complex. I again try not to think about it. I trust Lisa when she says he is a good guy so what the hell happened that day.

I push it out of my mind and finally ask, "Do you mind telling me where we are going?"

"To get the necklace, he says simply."

"You mean it wasn’t retrieved when the body was?"

He shakes his head no and a look of determination crosses his features. I decide to stay quiet the rest of the trip deep into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Now I see why we brought the range rover. The Rd is dirt and steep slightly wet from the rain which makes it muddy as well. We spin a little and I grab onto the seat to hold on.

"Hold on Lexi it gets worse." I start to get concerned but he says "don’t worry this is where I grew up I have driven this Rd a million times or more."

I relax a little realizing he is in complete control. I look out the window and am in absolute heaven. Large Oak trees and Locust trees standing as tall as buildings green shrubs and ferns everywhere, I even catch a grape vine growing as we speed up the road.

"It is so beautiful here." I say. "Yes it is." He replies. "It is a wonderland up here in winter, maybe I can show you this year."

"Yeah." I say excitedly "That would be great."

I enjoy the rest of the ride now that the road has bettered. I start to see cabins far back off the road and I ask before thinking which one did you grow up in? It’s a bit further up he nods toward the road. We continue as the forest opens up into a large field with a huge cabin standing in the middle.

"That’s where you grew up?" I say in awe.

"Yes." He says simply like it was no big deal. I couldn’t stop looking at the beautiful wood carvings that were all over the court yard. There were some of children, some of small animals and trees, some of larger but the one that stand out is a large wolf placed as if to protect the rest. "It’ breath taking." 

As we park the car a man comes out and says "Kaden." The man says with a wide grin on his face as he gets closer he reaches up to huge Kaden and they both embrace each other, patting each other on the back.

"Hey dad, this is Lexi." The smaller man smiles a gentle smile and says.  "it is very nice to meet you Lexi will you two be staying for dinner?"

I open my mouth to say were just here for business but Kaden quickly does it for me. "No dad we are just here to go to the crime scene to look for more evidence."

The man shakes his head and says. "You be careful up there, Kaden. The killer may still be on the loose."

Kaden assures him we will be careful and we set out on foot. After hiking for about 2 miles deep into the woods, we reach a place that honestly just looks like more woods to me.

Kaden stops and says. "We are here."

I shrug and go straight to work. I look around and then take the photo out of the folder I had in the back pack I had been carrying. I compare the back ground to the picture and try to see where exactly the necklace was laying. I spot a pine on the left that is also in the picture. I turn the photo to line the tree up and I go straight over bend down and move the earth. Just under the top layer of dirt lies the necklace. It has a crest on the metal pendant that was hidden in the photo by the earth. I had it to Kaden and he studies it intensely. I see his jaw line harden.

"Do you know it?"

"Yes." Is all he says as he turns walking out of here much faster than we did on the way in. I am almost running to keep up but he doesn’t seem to give a damn about my well-being or if I even get back to the office at this point.

"Hey!" I yell but he doesn’t stop, "Kaden!" I yell again as I start to lose sight of him.

I suddenly am grabbed and thrown to the ground quiet hard by someone. I scream at the sudden shock that is now my life. I am staring up at the biggest wolf I have ever seen. It is standing over me snarling and growing the more I scream the angrier it is getting. I am panicked screaming for help as loud as I can praying Kaden is still close enough to her my screams. Then another wolf barrels into the one attacking me. I quickly get up and run toward the direction I last saw Kaden not waiting a moment to see the wolves fighting f**k that, I am not being eating by a wolf. I run till I see the cabin come into view and Kaden’s car is still here. "Thank god." I say to myself. Suddenly Kaden comes out of the cabin like MR f*****g suave; "Why the f**k did you leave me up there. I was almost killed. Oh and by the way f*****g case solved, there are two pretty big wolves on the property."

I was so pissed I didn’t even realize I was cursing my boss. Much less in front of his house, in front of people he knew.

"Don’t bother to go to the trouble of firing me." I recover quickly.

"I quit if this is how you treat woman."

I stomped over to the car a waited on him to drive me back to the city at least there I don’t need him for anything anymore. f*****g prick I think to myself and my adrenaline starts to fade. I feel tears burn my eyes and start to fall. Great I am now sobbing like a child. Calm down I tell myself. Breathe in breathe out. Calm, I repeat over and over. I didn’t even realize Mr. Asshole had gotten into the driver’s seat but when I had calmed myself down I opened my eyes to see him staring coldly at me. He didn’t speak he just started the car and drove me back to the city. It was now almost time to go home so I spoke up and asks if he could just drop me off at my apartment. I would die before I told him but I now have major pain in my hip and ankle probably from landing hard on it when the wolf knocked me down, then having to run for my life. He did as I ask without saying one word to me. Great I thought I don’t want to hear your asshole excuse anyway. We arrive and he stops the car for me to get out. I reach for the handle and wince in pain as I try to push the car door open, He ignores it thank god and I have to slowly and painfully get myself out of this goddamn car. It is a large suv, so hop down and my ankle gives and I fall flat on my face, well, I braced for that to happen but someone caught me. I feel strong warm arms catch me. I open my eyes and see Kaden standing there holding me bridal style.

"How did you." He cut me off and said I should have told him I was hurt.

He put me back in the car and drove straight to the hospital. "I am fine just a bruise."

"No, a bruise doesn’t make you fall on your face."

"I don’t why you care now." I say more hateful than I meant too.

He breathes a dep breath. "You left me Kaden! That thing could have killed me." I said more upset and hurt now more than mad that he just f*****g left me. I press my lips together not wanting to engage in an argument with my boss on my first day of being promoted.

"I didn’t leave you." is all he said.

I didn’t want to hear his lies he knows he left, so I will just leave it there. We get to the Hospital and he carries me to the door where he then put me into a wheel chair and rolls me inside. He talks to the receptionist and hands her his card. I scoff at the gesture. He just doesn’t want me saying I got hurt on the job for insurance purposes. The nurse calls my name and He rolls me back into the ER, I explain to the nurse what happened leaving out the part about the wolf I just called them dogs. Kaden twitched when I did which I thought was strange but I let it go. She ordered x-rays. A few minutes later a man can rolling the x-ray machine.

"Sir you will have to step outside the room while we take the x-ray."

He shakes his head in understanding, and leaves the room. They quickly take the pictures and leave me alone for a moment. I close my eyes to rest for a minute and must have fallen asleep because when I woke up the Doctor and Kaden were standing in the room talking about my injury.

"She will not require surgery but she needs to take it very easy for the next few weeks."

"Wait weeks?" I say sleepily toward the doctor.

"Yes miss, oh sorry I say Fisher. Lexi Fisher." And reach out to shake his hand.

I see Kaden tense when I do but I ignore him for the fact he f*****g left me in the woods. Then I feel bad because he did bring me to the hospital but only because it was his fault I’m hurt in the first place.

The doctor hands me some papers to sign and then we leave with a prescription for pain medication and rest. Kaden rolls me out to the car and helps me get. I watch as he walks around to get in. He is very good looking, dark neat hair a little long on top but it makes him look masculine, He keeps his face shaved but not smoothly shaved, he leaves it so the shadows of his beard shows which is super sexy on a man. Olive skin and his brown eyes that seem to change to every color which is something else I have never seen before.

He gets in and says. "You will stay with me until your better so you can have round the clock care."

I protest that I can take care of myself but it has absolutely no effect as he is already calling Lisa to bring a few of my belongings. He hangs up and that’s that. I guess I am staying with Kaden while I recover as I have no choice.
