The offer

Clara shut the door behind her and stepped onto the porch, the cold rain misting against her skin. Ethan stayed under his umbrella, his sharp eyes scanning the street before settling on her. “You have two weeks to come up with fifty thousand, don’t you?” he said quietly. Her breath caught. “How do you know that?” “I know because I used to work for the man who came to your door.” He shifted his weight. “Your father owed him money, yes—but that’s not all. He was holding something for your father. Something worth a lot more than fifty thousand.” Clara’s pulse quickened. “What is it?” “That’s the problem,” Ethan said. “I don’t know exactly. But I know where it might be. And if we find it, you can pay off the debt—and have enough left to keep your family safe for a long time.” It sounded impossible, like something out of a bad crime novel. “And what do you get out of this?” Ethan’s jaw flexed. “Let’s just say I have my own reasons for wanting to hurt the man who’s after you.” Clara folded her arms. “Why should I trust you?” “You shouldn’t,” he said bluntly. “But your other option is to do nothing and wait for him to come back. And when he does, it won’t just be for the money.” The rain fell harder, the drops pounding against the roof in an unsteady rhythm. Clara thought of her mother’s trembling hands, of Ben’s secretive behavior, of the way the debt collector’s eyes had lingered on their family photos. “Where do we start?” she asked finally. Ethan’s lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile. “Tomorrow night. There’s a warehouse on the east side. Your father went there a lot before he died. We’ll meet there after dark.” He handed her a small card with nothing but a phone number on it, then stepped back into the shadows. “Don’t tell anyone,” he said, his voice almost lost in the rain. “Especially not your family.” Clara stood on the porch long after he was gone, the card clutched in her hand, wondering if she had just agreed to save her family—or doom them faster.
