The truth about the box

422 Words
The rain had eased to a light drizzle by the time Ethan pulled the car onto a deserted stretch of highway. The streetlamps here were far apart, casting long shadows over the slick asphalt. Clara sat with the duffel bag on her lap, her eyes fixed on the small black case nestled inside. “You’ve been dancing around it long enough,” she said. “Tell me what’s in here.” Ethan kept his eyes on the road. “I don’t know for certain. But I think your father stole something from the man you owe money to. Something worth a hell of a lot more than cash.” “Stole?” Clara repeated, the word burning her tongue. “You’re saying my father was a thief?” “I’m saying,” Ethan corrected, “he took something that didn’t belong to him—maybe to protect someone, maybe to use as leverage. But whatever his reasons, that box isn’t just valuable. It’s dangerous.” Clara’s grip on the duffel tightened. “Dangerous how?” Ethan glanced at her, his voice dropping. “Because I think it holds information—names, accounts, maybe even evidence—that could destroy people in his world. If the wrong hands get it, they’ll kill to make sure it disappears. And if the right hands get it…” “They could use it to take them down,” Clara finished quietly. “Exactly.” She looked back at the case. The lock was simple enough—one good hit and it would pop open—but something in Ethan’s tone made her hesitate. “If it’s that important, why not open it now?” “Because once we know what’s inside, we’re committed. The second we see it, there’s no walking away. And if you think they’re after you now…” He shook his head. “It’ll be worse.” Clara turned her gaze to the rain-speckled window. Her father’s voice echoed in her memory, warm and steady: You always protect the ones you love, Clara. No matter the cost. She took a deep breath. “Then maybe it’s time we stop running and find out what’s in it.” Ethan’s jaw flexed, but he didn’t answer. He pulled the car into the dark lot of an abandoned motel, killed the engine, and turned to face her. “Once we do this,” he warned, “there’s no going back.” Clara met his eyes. “I wasn’t planning to.” Ethan reached for the box.
