Chapter 4: The Ultimate Betrayal

498 Words
Karuna had been preparing herself for this moment for months. She had seen the signs – the cold distance, the late nights, the lingering scent of unfamiliar perfume on Akil’s clothes. But nothing could have prepared her for the sight before her now. She stood frozen in the dimly lit hallway of a luxury hotel, her heart pounding against her ribs. The elevator doors had just opened to reveal Akil, his tie loosened, his hand resting possessively on the waist of another woman. A woman who wasn’t his wife. A woman Karuna recognized. Sana. One of the elite socialites in their circle, always draped in designer dresses, always whispering too close to Akil at events. Then, as if sensing her presence, Akil looked up. For a moment, there was only silence. Sana stiffened, but Akil – he didn’t even have the decency to look shocked. His expression was blank, unreadable, as if she had caught him in a casual conversation rather than an act of betrayal. Karuna’s voice was eerily calm. “You’re not even going to deny it, are you?” Akil let out a slow breath, stepping forward as Sana moved away, clearly uncomfortable. “Karuna, this isn’t what you think.” A bitter laugh bubbled in her throat. “Really? Because it looks exactly like what I think.” Akil ran a hand through his hair, his frustration barely contained. "I didn’t plan for you to find out like this." “Like this?” She shook her head, rage and heartbreak twisting inside her. “You didn’t plan for me to find out at all.” His silence was louder than any confession. She swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay upright when all she wanted to do was break. “How long?” Akil exhaled sharply. “Karuna–” “How. Long?” His jaw tensed. “A few months.” A few months. Her stomach twisted. She had been lying awake at night, wondering how to fix their marriage, while he had been in someone else’s bed. “You were never going to tell me, were you?” Her voice wavered, but she refused to cry in front of him. Akil’s lips pressed into a thin line. “It wouldn’t have changed anything.” That was it. That was all she needed to hear. She had given him everything – her patience, her love, her loyalty. And in return, he had given her nothing but loneliness and betrayal. Karuna took a deep breath, straightening her shoulders, the pain was there, but beneath it, something stronger was taking root. Acceptance. Clarity. She had spent too long hoping Akil would see her, waiting for him to love her. But now she understood – he never would. And she? She was done waiting. Without another word, Karuna turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Akil standing in the hallway, watching her go. And for the first time in their marriage, she didn’t look back.
