Chapter 11: When Restraint Finally Breaks

562 Words
It had been building for weeks. The stolen glances. The subtle touches. The unspoken challenge hanging between them like a live wire. And tonight? It was about to snap. The moment it all changes. Karuna had just wrapped up a high-stakes deal, her adrenaline still humming as she stepped into the elevator of her penthouse building. Just as the doors were about to close—Imani slipped in. She raised an eyebrow. “Following me now?” Imani smirked, his hands in his pockets. “Just making sure my partner gets home safe.” The doors slid shut. The tension inside the small space was instant. It was just the two of them. No distractions. No business talk. Just the sound of their breathing, the weight of everything they hadn’t said pressing against them. Then, the elevator jolted to a stop. Karuna frowned. “What—” The lights dimmed slightly—power outage. A silence stretched between them. Then—a deep chuckle. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” Imani murmured, shaking his head. Karuna let out a breath, leaning against the wall. “Of course this happens now.” Imani turned to her, watching her carefully. “You nervous?” She met his gaze, unflinching. “No.” But her heart was racing. He took a slow step forward. “Liar.” She sucked in a breath as he reached out, tracing the sleeve of her blazer with a single, deliberate touch. “You’ve been fighting this,” he murmured. “Pretending you don’t feel it.” She swallowed. “Imani—” “You know this isn’t just business anymore.” His voice was low, deep, sending a shiver down her spine. He was so close now; the scent of his cologne, the warmth of his body wrapping around her like a slow-burning fire. And damn it—she wanted to burn. For weeks, she had convinced herself that keeping the walls up was the smart move. That, whatever this was, it needed to stay contained. But now? Now, locked in this space, with his gaze holding hers like a silent challenge— She wasn’t sure if she wanted to fight it anymore. Her breath was uneven. “If we cross this line...” Imani smirked, eyes flickering to her lips. “Then let’s stop pretending there is a line.” And then— He kissed her. It wasn’t tentative. It wasn’t hesitant. It was everything they had been holding back—weeks of tension exploding in a single moment. Karuna gasped against his lips, and that was all the invitation he needed. His hands found her waist, pulling her flush against him, deepening the kiss like he had been starving for it. And maybe—so had she. The elevator jolted back to life. The spell almost broke. But as the doors slid open, Imani didn’t move away. His forehead rested against hers, his voice rough. “Tell me you don’t want this, Karuna. Say the word, and I’ll walk away.” Her fingers curled into his shirt. She could lie. She could pretend. Or— She could finally let herself have something real. She looked up at him, eyes blazing. “I don’t want you to walk away.” Imani’s smirk returned, but this time—it was different. This time—it was victory.
