The masked figures surrounded them in the vault, their footsteps echoing against the stone walls. Amina’s heart pounded like a drum in her chest. Kael stepped protectively in front of her, his expression grim.
“We have to fight,” he whispered. “There’s no other way.”
Amina’s mind raced. Fight? She had never touched a weapon in her life. But she couldn’t run. Not now. Not with so much at stake.
The attackers lunged. Kael moved like a shadow, precise and lethal. Amina ducked instinctively, narrowly avoiding a swinging metal rod. Her pulse screamed, fear and adrenaline coiling through her veins.
Suddenly, one of the figures pulled off their mask—and Amina froze. It was someone she knew… someone she trusted. Her closest friend, the one person she thought would never betray her.
“Why… why are you doing this?” Amina stammered, shock rooting her to the ground.
Her friend smirked. “You never understood, Amina. Some secrets are too dangerous for anyone to uncover. Not even you.”
Kael grabbed her hand, pulling her toward a side exit. “We have to get out, now!”
They ran through narrow tunnels beneath the vault, shadows stretching like claws in the dim light. The sound of pursuit echoed behind them, each step a reminder that the danger was far from over.
Amina’s thoughts spun. Her mother’s journal, the vault, Kael’s connection to her past… and now, betrayal from someone she trusted. Could she trust anyone?
They reached a hidden door leading to the streets above. Kael opened it cautiously, scanning the empty alley.
“We’re not safe yet,” he warned. “But we’re close to the truth. And soon, you’ll understand why all of this matters.”
Amina took a shaky breath, gripping his hand tightly. Fear, confusion, and a strange spark of something else coursed through her—something she couldn’t name but felt deep in her bones.
