“Are you okay?” Logan asked in alarm as he rushed to her; “Do you need help? We have a doctor in the pack, he can check on you if you feel any pain.”
Luna looked up at the man who rushed to her and felt very strange in her heart. For a second, she could not reply as she found him strange. His behaviour towards her was different compared to the others; even a look in his eyes could not betray his enthusiasm. She could only conclude that it was because of the babies.
“I’m fine. It just took me by surprise.” She answered
“Do you need anything? Anything at all you can tell me,” he added as he stared at her with his mesmerizing blue eyes. Unconsciously, Luna asked, “Why are you so nice to me? I’m a witch.”
The Alpha, whose name she surprisingly remembered as Logan kept his eyes on her. Luna swore she could see lots of emotions swimming in his gaze and she recognized the conflict that did not lose out in displaying itself. While the two were at a loss about their feelings, the other wolves in the room had disappeared in other to give them some privacy.
Logan knew that the truth of the matter had to be spoken out since she was here, but the problem was whether she would accept him. The greatest fear of wolves is being rejected by their mate. The pain itself is unbearable and survival is only by a thin line. Although it has never happened in his pack before, it doesn’t mean he has not seen or heard about it. Either way, he knows that his mate is a unique match; a wolf and a witch – two opposing races.
Logan took a deep breath and began to explain the origin and sacredity of mates much to Luna’s surprise. In her mind, she was thinking that it must have hurt for him to have lost his mate - the woman she met that day. However, she concluded that the pain she was feeling in her heart just by listening to him was a pity for his loss.
“Why are you telling me all this?” she inquired, “I’m a witch and also a typical stranger, so why are you telling me something very important to you and your pack? Aren’t you scared that I will tell my race about it?”
“Luna, I know you see us as strangers, but know that mates are not chosen just because we want it and it can’t be predicted because you never know who the moon goddess will choose for you. I know this will come as a shock, most especially because we’ve just met, but believe me, Luna, even without this, I can’t stop the feeling in my heart. Luna, you are my mate.”
Luna stared at the man in front of her expecting him to claim that he was joking but, the ocean-blue gaze on her proved that what she had heard was no joke.
“B-But I’m a witch!” She blurted out
“It doesn’t matter. Luna, I believe there is a reason for this; giving birth to my pups, becoming my mate, everything has its reason.” Logan sensed her fear and added “You don’t have to live in fear or keep running Luna. As long as you accept me I’ll protect you. My people will accept you too. You will become one of us; we’ll be together as a family.”
Her heart skipped a beat when she heard the word, ‘family’. She has spent her entire life as an outcast in the witches’ lair and the only family she knew was her mother’s phantasm. She has always dreamt of having people to love her. Every full moon, she would wish and hope for someone to hold her and stay with her. She had longed for the warmth of family, but it was hopeless. Now, that offer is given to her by a wolf.
The picture appeared in her mind; a family of four, happy and peaceful; Logan as the father and she as the mother. Instantly, the wish that she had forgotten began to grow deep in her heart once more. She wanted it all; peace, happiness, love, family.
“Luna” Logan held her thin hands in his large ones, “I admit that I fell in love with you the moment I saw you. You have no idea how happy I was when I saw you, my mate. I felt so complete and right now, there is nothing that I want more than for you to be by my side forever. I admit I don’t like witches; I hate them to the bone, but Luna, you are so unique and very different. You glow so bright that I feel so scared about letting other men see you.”
Luna lowered her head trying to hide her embarrassment but her red face already gave her away making Logan smirk in satisfaction and his wolf growled from within.
“I – I don’t know what to say,” she replied
“Think about it Luna, but know that you are safe here with me.”
She paled instantly as she remembered the witches. Is she safe, will they be able to find her? Logan noticed that she was trembling and asked what the matter was. When she explained her situation to him, he frowned.
“What do they want?” he growled
“At first, their main target was me. I’ve been with them ever since I was a baby. They locked me up for nineteen years, and the moment there was a chance, I escaped. They were trying to bring me back but, luckily, I’d broken the seal on my powers. Now, they want the babies, so they will double their efforts to get them.” Luna got paler and paler as she explained. She realized that even if the witches give up on hunting down the babies; they will not give up on hunting her. Therefore, she had to leave.
“I can’t stay in the same place for long… I- I have to go!”
She tried to stand but Logan held back, “You are going nowhere” He said sternly
“Listen to me, this is where you ought to be, this is your home, Luna. Let us protect you. You are my mate and I must protect you. Moreover, if you decide to leave where will you go and for how long will you keep running? We are your family. I, the pups and the entire pack, we can protect you.”
Luna froze speechlessly. For the first time in her life, she felt a surge of emotions that was so strange, ‘what was that?’ she thought in her mind, but deep down she knew that Logan was speaking the truth. Although they’d just met, she felt so safe with him and couldn’t help but trust him. She’d always craved a family and people she could call her own now, it’s been offered to her on a silver platter, how could she refuse?
Logan was startled when he saw beads of tears falling down her perfect hazel eyes.
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt, injured, or….”
“I’m fine.” Luna replied “I… everything just feels like a dream. Are you sure you want me to stay? You are not lying, are you?”
“No, I’m not. Everything I said now is true.”
“Okay then, I’ll stay.”
