Chapter 1: *Homecoming*
Daniel Carter hadn’t seen his hometown in five years, but the memories rushed back the moment the skyline appeared on the horizon. The familiar sight filled him with both nostalgia and dread. His departure had been abrupt, almost selfish. He hadn’t given his sister, Emma, a proper goodbye—just a promise he never intended to keep.
The driver slowed the car as they approached the family estate, now a shadow of its former glory. The grand mansion, which once boasted manicured gardens and spotless windows, was in disrepair. The paint was cracked and peeling, the hedges overgrown. It was a physical manifestation of what had happened to the Carter family itself.
Stepping out of the car, Daniel took a deep breath, steeling himself for what lay ahead. The chill in the autumn air did little to ease his nerves as he walked up the cracked stone steps to the front door. His footsteps echoed in the eerie silence of the once lively home.
Before he could knock, the door creaked open, and there she stood—Emma. She hadn’t changed much in appearance. She still had that determined look in her eyes, the same defiance that told him she hadn’t forgiven him, not yet.
"Daniel," she said, her voice soft but filled with unsaid words.
“Emma,” he replied, feeling the awkwardness in the space between them. He had no idea what to say. How do you apologize for five years of silence? For walking away when your family needed you most?
Emma’s eyes narrowed slightly, and the corner of her lips twitched, not quite a smile. “You’re actually here,” she said, her tone edging on disbelief. She crossed her arms. “Why now? What makes you come back after all this time?”
Daniel looked down, knowing the truth wouldn’t make things better. He hadn’t come back for her, not at first. He came back because he’d heard rumors. Rumors that their family business, Carter Industries, was on the verge of collapse. But standing in front of Emma now, the guilt weighed down on him like a lead chain. He should’ve come back long before things got this bad.
“I heard things weren’t going well with the company,” he said, his voice even. “I came to help.”
“Help?” Emma’s eyes flashed with anger. “Where was your help when everything started falling apart? When I was drowning trying to keep this family together, where were you?”
Daniel remained silent, absorbing the sting of her words. He couldn’t argue with her, couldn’t defend his absence. He had no excuse. He could only face it head-on.
“I’m here now, Emma. And I’m staying. Whatever it takes, we’ll fix this.”
Emma’s gaze held his, the tension thick in the air between them. “We?” she repeated, her voice sharp. “Don’t act like we’re a team, Daniel. You left. I’ve been fighting this battle alone.”
Her words cut deeper than he had anticipated. Daniel knew he had broken their bond. Once, they had been inseparable—siblings who had each other’s backs no matter what. But his choice to leave had shattered that trust, and he realized it would take more than a simple apology to repair the damage.
Emma’s eyes softened slightly, but there was still that wall between them, thick and impenetrable. She stepped aside to let him in, but her gesture felt more out of duty than welcome.
“Come in,” she said flatly. “You might as well see what’s left of the empire you abandoned.”

Inside, the mansion was a shell of its former self. The grand chandelier that once sparkled overhead was now dusty, and the expensive furniture looked worn and tired. The hallways were dark, and the silence felt oppressive, like the house itself was mourning the loss of its former glory.
Emma led him to the study, where files and papers were strewn across the large oak desk. A map of the city was pinned to the wall with various locations marked in red ink. It was clear that Emma had been working tirelessly to keep the business afloat, but the cracks were evident.
“Alexander King has been relentless,” Emma began, her voice tense. “He’s taken nearly half our contracts in the last year alone. He’s using every trick in the book—underhanded deals, false accusations, and he’s got half the city under his thumb.”
Daniel frowned at the mention of Alexander King. The Kings had been the Carter family’s rivals for as long as he could remember, but Alexander had taken things to a new level since their parents’ death. King was ruthless, and now, he was circling like a vulture, waiting to pick apart what was left of their family’s legacy.
“I knew things were bad, but I didn’t realize it had gotten this far,” Daniel admitted, scanning the map and the papers scattered across the desk. “Why didn’t you call me sooner?”
Emma shot him a withering glance. “And say what? That I couldn’t handle it? That I needed my big brother to swoop in and save the day?” She shook her head. “I’ve been doing fine on my own.”
Daniel stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Emma, I didn’t come back to belittle what you’ve done. I came back because I know how King operates. He doesn’t play by the rules, and he’s not going to stop until he has everything.”
Emma’s face softened, just for a moment. She was tired, that much was clear, but there was still a fire in her. “I’m not letting him have it,” she said firmly. “Not without a fight.”
Daniel nodded. “Then let’s fight him together.”
