The Devereaux mansion had never felt like home.
But tonight, as Amara stepped through its grand entrance beside Ethan, it felt like something else entirely.
A battlefield.
The marble floors gleamed under the chandelier lights, polished to perfection, just like the image the family had always tried to maintain. Wealth. Power. Control.
Lies.
The doors hadn’t even fully closed behind them before the tension began to rise.
“Kyro.”
The voice was sharp.
Cold.
Familiar.
Xolana didn’t need to turn to know who it was.
Mr Devereaux stood at the center of the room, his presence commanding, his expression darker than she had ever seen. Beside him stood Darius, jaw tight, eyes burning with rage, and Sanaa, whose shock had barely masked the venom brewing beneath her perfectly composed face.
Xolana felt Kyro’s hand lightly brush against the small of her back.
A warning.
Or reassurance.
Maybe both.
“You’re back,” Mr Devereaux said slowly, his gaze fixed on Kyro.
Kyro didn’t bow. Didn’t greet him.
Didn’t acknowledge authority.
“I never left,” he replied calmly. “I was just… waiting.”
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Darius let out a bitter laugh. “Waiting? For what? To ruin what’s left of this family?”
Kyro’s lips curved slightly. “No, Darius. You already started that.”
Darius stepped forward, fists clenched. “You think this is funny? You think you can just walk in and—”
“I wouldn’t,” Kyro interrupted smoothly, his tone low but lethal.
Something in his voice made Darius stop.
Not out of respect.
Out of instinct.
Fear.
Xolana noticed.
And stored it away.
Sanaa finally spoke, her voice soft but dripping with poison. “And what exactly is *this*, Kyro?”
Her eyes flicked to Xolana.
Slow. Calculated.
Cruel.
“This,” she continued, “is clearly some kind of joke.”
Xolana lifted her chin.
“It’s not.”
All eyes turned to her.
“I’m marrying Kyro.”
The words landed heavily in the room.
Darius’s face twisted. “You’re what?”
“Marrying him,” she repeated, her voice steady now. Stronger.
“You can’t be serious,” Sanaa snapped, stepping forward. “You’re doing this out of spite. It’s pathetic.”
Xolana smiled.
Not kindly.
“Spite?” she echoed. “No, Sanaa. This is strategy.”
Sanaa’s expression flickered—just for a second.
Then hardened.
Kyro stepped forward then, seamlessly taking control of the room.
“The engagement will be announced tomorrow,” he said. “The wedding shortly after.”
“You don’t get to make those decisions!” Mr Devereaux barked.
Kyro’s gaze shifted to him, calm and unyielding.
“I already have.”
The room fell silent again.
Xolani could feel it now.
The shift.
The power dynamic is changing.
For the first time in years,
Kyro wasn’t the outcast.
He was the threat.
Later That Night
Xolani stood in Kyro’s penthouse, staring at the city lights stretching endlessly beyond the glass walls.
Everything had happened so fast.
Too fast.
“You’re thinking about backing out.”
His voice came from behind her.
She didn’t turn.
“Maybe.”
A pause.
Then,
“Don’t.”
She finally faced him.
Ethan had removed his jacket, his sleeves rolled slightly, his posture relaxed—but his eyes were anything but.
“Give me one good reason,” she challenged.
He walked toward her slowly.
Measured steps.
Controlled energy.
“Because they’re already planning their next move,” he said. “And without me, you wouldn’t see it coming.”
“I don’t need protection.”
“No,” he agreed. “You need positioning.”
That made her hesitate.
Kyro stopped in front of her, close—but not touching.
“You were never meant to win in that family, Xolani,” he continued quietly. “You were meant to be used.”
Her chest tightened.
“That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
His gaze held hers.
Unflinching.
Unforgiving.
“Your fiancé betrayed you. Your sister helped him. And your father?” he added softly. “He said nothing.”
Xolana's silence said everything.
Kyro reached into his pocket and pulled out a document.
He handed it to her.
“The contract.”
Her fingers brushed his as she took it.
A strange spark passed between them.
Unexpected.
Unwanted.
She looked down.
CONTRACT MARRIAGE AGREEMENT
* Duration: 12 months
* Public Image: Devoted married couple
* No interference with each other’s personal autonomy
* Absolute loyalty in public
* Private boundaries respected
* No emotional entanglement
Xolani let out a quiet breath.
“No emotions,” she murmured.
“Non-negotiable,” Ethan said.
She looked up at him.
“And what makes you so sure you can follow that rule?”
A flicker of something crossed his eyes.
Gone just as quickly.
“I don’t get attached.”
Something about the way he said it felt…
Rehearsed.
Xolani studied him for a moment longer.
Then,
She picked up the pen resting on the table.
“This isn’t love,” she said.
“No,” Kyro agreed.
She signed her name.
It wasn’t hesitation she felt.
It was a transformation.
A line crossed.
A version of herself left behind.
When she finished, she placed the pen down slowly.
Kyro took the contract.
Signed beneath her name.
Then looked at her.
And for the first time,
There was something almost human in his gaze.
“From this moment on,” he said quietly, “you’re no longer alone in this.”
Xolani held his gaze.
Her heart beat once.
Hard.
“Good,” she replied.
“Because I’m not losing again.”
Outside, the city shimmered.
Inside,
A dangerous alliance had just been sealed.
And neither of them knew…
That was the game they had just entered.
Was far more twisted than revenge.
