THE FIRST MOVE

1100 Words
The city never slept. But neither did their enemies. Xolana woke to the sound of her phone vibrating nonstop. At first, she ignored it, turning slightly in the unfamiliar softness of Kyro’s bed. The events of the past two days still felt unreal—like she had stepped into someone else’s life and forgotten how to step out. Then the vibration didn’t stop. Annoyed, she reached for her phone. And froze. 27 missed calls. 14 messages. 3 breaking news alerts. Her stomach tightened. Something was wrong. She sat up quickly, opening the first alert. “DEVEREAUX GROUP UNDER INVESTIGATION – FRAUD ALLEGATIONS EMERGE” Her heart skipped. “What?” She opened another. “INSIDER CLAIMS KYRO DEVEREAUX MANIPULATED SHARES ILLEGALLY” Her chest tightened. This wasn’t random. This was targeted. The bedroom door opened. Kyro walked in. Fully dressed. Already composed. Like he had been expecting this. “You’ve seen it,” he said. Not a question. Xolana looked at him sharply. “Tell me it’s not true.” “It’s not.” Relief flickered—but only slightly. “Then what is this?” Kyro walked over, taking the phone gently from her hand and placing it on the bed. “This,” he said calmly, “is their first move.” Xolana’s brows furrowed. “Your father?” “And your sister,” he added. Her jaw tightened. Of course. “They’re trying to discredit me,” Kyro continued. “If they can’t stop me legally, they’ll destroy my reputation.” Xolana stood, frustration rising. “And what happens if people believe it?” “They will,” he said simply. The honesty hit harder than reassurance would have. “And you’re just… calm about it?” she asked. Kyro’s gaze met hers. “I’m prepared for it.” Xolana shook her head, pacing slightly. “No. No, this isn’t just business anymore. They’re trying to ruin you publicly.” “And you,” he added. She stopped. “What?” “You’re attached to me now,” he said. “Which means anything that hits me… hits you too.” The weight of that settled heavily in her chest. She exhaled slowly. “Okay,” she said. “Then we fight back.” Kyro watched her carefully. Measured. Interested. “And how do you suggest we do that?” Xolana met his gaze, determination building. “We get ahead of it.” He tilted his head slightly. “Explain.” “We don’t wait for them to control the narrative,” she said. “We take it.” A pause. Then, Kyro’s lips curved faintly. “There she is.” She frowned. “What?” “The woman who slapped my brother in front of an entire church,” he said. “I was wondering when she’d come back.” Despite herself Xolana almost smiled. Later That Day – Damage Control The conference room was quieter this time. More controlled. But the tension? Still there. Kyro sat at the head of the table, reviewing documents while his legal team spoke rapidly around him. “It’s a weak case,” one lawyer said. “But it’s loud enough to cause damage.” “That’s the point,” another added. “They don’t need to win. They just need doubt.” Xolana stood near the window, arms crossed, thinking. Then, “What about the internal audit records?” she asked. The room went quiet. Kyro looked at her. “Those reports are confidential,” one of the lawyers said. “Not if we release them,” Xolana replied. They hesitated. Kyro didn’t. “Continue,” he said. Xolana stepped forward slightly. “If the accusation is financial manipulation, then we show transparency,” she explained. “Full audit reports. Clean records. No gaps.” “That’s risky,” someone argued. “It exposes everything.” “It also clears everything,” she countered. Silence. Kyro leaned back slightly, watching her. Analyzing. Then, “Do it.” The room shifted. Just like that. Decision made. Outside – Private Moment The meeting ended quickly after that. Plans in motion. Strategies set. Xolana stepped out into the hallway, exhaling slowly. “You handled that well.” Kyro’s voice came from behind her. She turned slightly. “I’m not just here to wear a ring,” she said. “I know.” There was no mockery in his tone. Just truth. A pause lingered between them. Then, “You didn’t hesitate,” he added. “Neither did you,” she replied. Their eyes met. Something passed between them again. Stronger this time. More noticeable. More dangerous. “You trust me,” Amara said quietly. Kyro held her gaze. “I trust your instincts.” Not the same thing. But not nothing either. Before she could respond, A voice cut through the moment. “Wow.” They both turned. Darius. Leaning casually against the wall, though his expression was anything but relaxed. “This is really happening,” he said, shaking his head. “You two… working together.” Xolana’s expression hardened instantly. “What do you want?” Darius pushed off the wall, stepping closer. “To warn you,” he said, looking directly at her. “About what?” His gaze darkened. “You think you know him,” he said quietly. “But you don’t.” Kyro didn’t react. Didn’t move. Didn’t speak. That alone made Xolana uneasy. “Darius—” she started. “He’s not who you think he is,” Darius continued. “Ask him why he really left this family.” Silence. Heavy. Loaded. Xolana’s eyes flicked to Kyro. For a split second, She thought she saw something. Not anger. Not fear. Something deeper. Buried. But then it was gone. Kyro stepped forward slightly. “You’re done,” he said coldly. Darius smirked. “No,” he replied. “I’m just getting started.” Then he walked away. The silence that followed felt different. Not tense. Not loud. But… uncertain. Xolana turned slowly to Kyro. “What did he mean?” Kyro didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked down the hallway where Darius had disappeared. Then back at her. “Nothing you need to worry about.” That answer didn’t satisfy her. Not even close. But for now, She let it go. Because one thing was becoming very clear This game? Was bigger than revenge. And the deeper she stepped into Kyro’s world… The more she realized, She wasn’t just fighting enemies anymore. She was uncovering secrets. And some of them… We're about to change everything.
