Chapter Three: The Reluctant Luna
The days following the Alpha King’s announcement were the hardest of Elara’s life.
Everywhere she went, people stared.
Some looked at her with admiration.
Others with jealousy.
Many simply looked afraid.
To them, she was no longer the herb girl who spent her days helping injured wolves.
She was the woman chosen by the Alpha King.
Whether she wanted it or not.
⸻
The pressure began immediately.
The elders visited her home.
The warriors visited her home.
Even women she barely knew suddenly appeared with advice.
“You should be grateful.”
“No woman would refuse such an honor.”
“You’ll become the most powerful Luna in the world.”
The words repeated endlessly.
Day after day.
Until they felt like stones crushing her chest.
Nobody asked what she wanted.
Nobody seemed to care.
⸻
One afternoon, Mara found her sitting beside the river.
The water flowed quietly beneath the afternoon sun.
For a few moments, neither woman spoke.
Then Mara sighed.
“You look exhausted.”
“I am.”
“You haven’t been sleeping.”
“No.”
Mara sat beside her.
“Have you decided?”
Elara stared at the water.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Because the truth was far more complicated.
Part of her wanted to refuse.
To run.
To disappear into some distant territory where no one knew her name.
But another part understood the danger.
Rejecting an Alpha King could have consequences she couldn’t even imagine.
Not because Kael had threatened her.
He hadn’t.
But powerful people changed the world around them simply by existing.
⸻
That evening, another unexpected visitor arrived.
Kael.
The entire village seemed to freeze when he entered.
Children ran indoors.
Adults stepped aside.
Warriors lowered their heads.
His presence alone commanded obedience.
Elara was gathering herbs outside her cottage when she saw him approaching.
Her stomach immediately tightened.
He stopped several feet away.
Far enough not to intimidate her.
Close enough to remind her who he was.
“You’re avoiding me.”
His voice remained calm.
She folded her arms.
“I’m thinking.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“About refusing.”
She didn’t answer.
That silence was answer enough.
⸻
For a moment, neither moved.
The breeze carried the scent of rain through the air.
Then Kael spoke again.
“Walk with me.”
It wasn’t quite a command.
But it wasn’t really a request either.
Reluctantly, Elara followed.
They walked toward the forest in silence.
The guards remained behind.
For the first time, they were truly alone.
⸻
The deeper they went into the trees, the quieter the world became.
Birds chirped overhead.
Leaves rustled softly.
The forest seemed peaceful.
A sharp contrast to the storm inside her heart.
Finally, she stopped walking.
“I don’t understand you.”
Kael turned toward her.
“What don’t you understand?”
“Why me?”
The question escaped before she could stop it.
His expression softened slightly.
“You want honesty?”
“Yes.”
For several seconds, he studied her face.
Then he answered.
“I don’t know.”
Her brow furrowed.
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
The Alpha King actually looked frustrated.
As though he hated the answer himself.
“I’ve met queens.”
Silence.
“Princesses.”
More silence.
“Women whose beauty was praised across kingdoms.”
His eyes locked onto hers.
“And none of them mattered.”
A strange feeling stirred inside her.
Confusion.
Fear.
Curiosity.
⸻
“You barely know me.”
The words came out quietly.
Kael’s gaze never wavered.
“Then let me learn.”
The sincerity surprised her.
Because for the first time, he didn’t sound like a king.
He sounded like a man.
A lonely one.
⸻
Unfortunately, the moment didn’t last.
A distant howl echoed through the forest.
Kael’s expression changed instantly.
His entire posture became alert.
Dangerous.
Predatory.
The Alpha King returned.
A warrior emerged from the trees moments later.
Breathing heavily.
“My King.”
“What is it?”
“The Eastern Pack.”
Kael’s face darkened.
“They’ve crossed the border.”
The air around him seemed to grow colder.
More dangerous.
Elara suddenly understood why everyone feared him.
This was not merely a ruler.
This was a warrior capable of destroying entire armies.
⸻
The messenger continued.
“Our scouts report fifty warriors.”
Kael nodded.
“Prepare my men.”
The warrior disappeared immediately.
Elara expected Kael to leave.
Instead, he turned back toward her.
His expression remained hard.
But his voice softened.
“Return home.”
The sudden change caught her off guard.
“What?”
“It’s not safe.”
“I’m not helpless.”
A faint smile touched his lips.
“I know.”
Then his gaze became serious again.
“But I need to know you’re safe.”
The intensity in those words sent a chill through her.
Because she finally understood something.
Kael’s obsession wasn’t fading.
It was growing.
And that frightened her more than anything else.
⸻
As darkness fell, warriors prepared for battle.
The entire village buzzed with tension.
Yet Elara couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened in the forest.
For the first time, she had seen the man behind the crown.
Behind the power.
Behind the fear.
And somehow, that made everything more complicated.
Because monsters were easier to hate.
But Kael wasn’t only a monster.
He was also human.
And that made him far more dangerous.
