Blood and Moonlight

Chapter Four: Blood and Moonlight The night Kael left for battle, the entire village remained awake. Torches burned along the roads. Warriors moved through the darkness carrying weapons. The air smelled of rain, steel, and fear. Elara stood outside her cottage watching the Alpha King’s army disappear into the forest. At the front rode Kael. Silent. Focused. Deadly. For a brief moment, he turned his head. Their eyes met across the distance. Then he vanished into the shadows. ⸻ The following days felt endless. No one knew exactly what was happening beyond the borders. Only rumors returned. The Eastern Pack had invaded northern territory. Several villages had been attacked. Warriors were dying. Every day new messengers arrived. Every day more worried faces gathered around the square. And every day Elara found herself wondering if Kael was alive. The realization irritated her. She didn’t want to think about him. Yet somehow she couldn’t stop. ⸻ Three days later, an elderly woman arrived at the healing house. Her name was Elder Selene. She was the oldest wolf in the pack. Many believed she possessed gifts connected to the Moon Goddess herself. Most people respected her. Some feared her. Selene rarely left her home. Which made her visit unusual. ⸻ The old woman studied Elara carefully. Longer than necessary. Almost as if she were seeing something invisible. Finally she spoke. “Come with me.” Elara frowned. “Why?” Selene smiled mysteriously. “Because there are things you need to know.” ⸻ Curiosity eventually won. By sunset they stood deep within the forest. Moonlight filtered through ancient trees. Silver beams illuminated the path ahead. The forest seemed strangely alive. As though it were waiting. Watching. Listening. Elara felt uneasy. “What are we doing here?” Selene stopped walking. Instead of answering, she pointed toward a small pool of water. “Look.” ⸻ Elara stepped forward. The surface reflected the moon. Perfectly still. Perfectly clear. She stared into it. At first she saw only her reflection. Then the water shifted. Images appeared. Strange images. Ancient wolves. Powerful Alphas. Warriors wearing crowns of silver. Her breath caught. “What is this?” Selene’s expression became serious. “Your history.” ⸻ Confusion filled Elara’s face. “My history?” The old woman nodded. “Your family hid the truth.” A cold feeling settled inside her stomach. “What truth?” Selene took a deep breath. “Your bloodline.” Silence. The forest itself seemed to hold its breath. Then came the words that changed everything. “You are not descended from Omegas.” ⸻ Elara stared at her. Unable to process what she had heard. “What?” “Your ancestors were rulers.” The old woman pointed toward the water. The images shifted again. A woman appeared. Beautiful. Strong. Wearing a silver crown. Something about her felt familiar. Too familiar. Elara’s heart skipped. “Who is she?” Selene’s eyes softened. “Queen Lyanna.” ⸻ The image shimmered. The resemblance was undeniable. The same eyes. The same face. The same silver streak hidden within dark hair. Elara felt dizzy. “That’s impossible.” “No.” Selene shook her head. “It is the truth.” The old woman moved closer. “Centuries ago, your family ruled one of the strongest kingdoms in werewolf history.” Elara couldn’t speak. Everything she believed about herself suddenly felt uncertain. ⸻ “What happened?” Selene sighed. “War.” The answer came quietly. “Enemies destroyed your kingdom.” The images shifted once more. Fire. Blood. Death. Castles collapsing. Families fleeing. Children hiding. The destruction was horrifying. “Those who survived erased their identities.” Selene’s voice trembled slightly. “They became ordinary wolves.” Elara stared at the water. Unable to look away. “To survive.” ⸻ The revelation shook her to the core. Her entire life she had believed she was insignificant. Ordinary. Forgettable. Now she was learning that her blood carried a forgotten legacy. A royal one. ⸻ “Does Kael know?” The question escaped before she could stop it. Selene immediately became serious. “No.” Relief washed through Elara. At least there was that. For now. ⸻ Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Because at that exact moment, miles away on a battlefield soaked in blood, Kael was learning a secret of his own. The Eastern Pack had surrendered. Their Alpha knelt defeated before him. Broken. Bleeding. Terrified. Kael’s warriors surrounded them. Victory belonged to the North. But the defeated Alpha’s final words made Kael pause. ⸻ “The girl.” Kael’s silver eyes narrowed. “What girl?” The wounded Alpha laughed bitterly. “The one you’re obsessed with.” Dangerous silence followed. Every warrior nearby froze. Few people dared speak about Elara in front of Kael. Fewer survived doing so. “Choose your next words carefully.” The defeated Alpha smiled through bloody teeth. “You don’t even know who she is.” Kael’s expression darkened. ⸻ “What are you talking about?” The man laughed again. “She’s not an Omega.” The battlefield suddenly became very quiet. “Her bloodline is older than yours.” Kael’s eyes flashed. “What?” The Alpha’s smile widened. “Ask your historians.” Then he collapsed unconscious. Leaving Kael standing motionless beneath the moonlight. ⸻ For the first time since meeting Elara, genuine shock crossed the Alpha King’s face. Because something deep inside him already knew the truth. The pull he felt toward her. The strange connection. The impossible fascination. Perhaps it had never been random. Perhaps destiny had been moving pieces neither of them could see. And if the stories were true… Elara was far more important than anyone imagined. Including herself.
