Chapter Three: Jessiah - Part Two

690 Words
His heart pounded in his chest with a potent mix of fear and excitement as he crept closer, the darkness of the corner seeming to grow denser with each step. Jessiah slowly stretched forth both his hands, positioning them towards the unidentified creature. His palms faced the source of the noise, fingers slightly curled with tension. On numerous occasions in the past, he had experienced a surge of energy pulsating from his hands, an inexplicable phenomenon that both terrified and fascinated him. Today, he fervently hoped that this peculiar ability would prove useful against the unseen foe. The air grew thick with tension as he prepared himself, ready to harness this strange power to defend himself against the lurking menace. Suddenly, a large rat lunged forward from the shadows, its beady eyes gleaming ominously in the dim light. Startled, Jessiah stumbled backward, tripping over his own feet and landing hard on the cold floor. The rat, quick as a flash, scampered off into the hallway, disappearing from sight. No sooner had the rodent vanished, a loud scream echoed through the house. It was unmistakable – the voice belonged to Shawn. The piercing cry cut through the eerie silence, sending a jolt of fear through Jessiah. In a flurry of panic, he scrambled to his feet and sprinted down the hall, unsure of what he would find on the other side. As Jessiah burst into view, Shawn cowered in the corner, his eyes wild with terror and his body trembling with fright. Right at the end of the long, teak wood hallway was Shawn, round and red, standing on top of one of the hall chairs that was usually decorated with an array of colorful cushions. He was screaming at the top of his lungs, his face contorted with fear, while staring down at the rat. The rodent was furiously trying to enter a hole at the base of the chair, its tail flicking wildly as it scrambled for cover. The sight would have been amusing under different circumstances, but in the dimly lit hallway, it only added to the eerie atmosphere. Shawn's usually jovial face was pale, his eyes wide with terror, as he tried futilely to distance himself from the unwelcome guest. Jessiah stood frozen at the entrance of the hallway, his gaze fixed on the trembling figure of Shawn. The sight of his adoptive father, usually so imposing and fearless, reduced to a whimpering, terrified mess was a shock to his system. Jessiah could feel Shawn's gaze slowly turning towards him. The accusation in his eyes was unmistakable, his voice shaky yet clear as he managed to choke out, "This! This is your fault! You brought this vermin here!" The words were hurled at him like daggers, piercing his heart and deepening his guilt. His throat tightened the words of protest dying on his lips. Shawn leaped down from the chair, his round face scarlet with fear and anger. He pointed a trembling finger at Jessiah, screaming, "You are vermin! These are your friends!" Before Jessiah could react, Shawn had him by the collar of his shirt, dragging him down the hall toward his bedroom. Panic knotted in Jessiah's stomach as he was hauled off the ground, his feet kicking the air helplessly. Shawn's heavy breaths echoed in the dim hallway as he struggled to pry open the window in Jessiah's room. Jessiah began to whimper, fear seeping into his heart as he realized what was about to happen. Once the window was open, Shawn adjusted his grip on Jessiah, his fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt. Lifting him up, he carried him over to the balcony edge, the icy night air stinging Jessiah's face. "If you want to sleep with rodents, you can sleep outside!" Shawn's voice had turned cruel, his words echoing in the stillness of the night. Fear morphed into terror as Jessiah felt himself hoisted over the balcony edge. He didn't remember the moment Shawn let go, only the sensation of falling, the world spinning around him. A sharp crack resonated through the silent night as his head hit the concrete below.
