Chapter Twelve - Under the Chandeliers

773 Words
The university auditorium had never looked so elegant. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, their warm light reflecting off polished marble floors. White roses decorated every table, while a live string quartet played softly in the corner. Students arrived in gowns and tuxedos, laughing as photographers captured the evening. William adjusted the collar of his tuxedo. "I hate ties." Jake laughed. "You've complained about that for twenty minutes." "They're designed to slowly suffocate people." Jake rolled his eyes. "You look fine." "I know." William smirked. "I just wanted sympathy." Across the hall... Vincent stood in front of a mirror. The tailored black tuxedo fit him perfectly. Too perfectly. It reminded him of every formal dinner, every business meeting, every event where he'd been expected to smile and nod while his future was discussed like a company merger. There was a knock. "You ready?" William. Vincent took a deep breath before opening the door. For a moment... Neither of them spoke. William blinked. "...Wow." Vincent shifted awkwardly. "What?" "I..." William smiled. "You clean up really well." A faint blush crept onto Vincent's cheeks. "You don't look bad yourself." Jake appeared between them. "Can you two stop staring at each other?" Both immediately looked away. Jake grinned. "I knew it." The ballroom buzzed with conversation. Faculty members greeted donors. Students mingled around the buffet. Professor Bennett spotted Vincent almost immediately. "There you are." He smiled proudly. "Congratulations again on your nomination." Vincent thanked him quietly. Nearby, William watched with admiration. He had always known Vincent was brilliant. Seeing professors treat him with such respect only made him admire him more. The evening's host stepped onto the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "Tonight, we celebrate the students who have demonstrated excellence both inside and outside the classroom." Applause echoed through the hall. Names were announced. Scholarship recipients. Athletes. Volunteers. Finally— "Our next nominee..." The presenter smiled. "Mr. Vincent Wynne." The spotlight found him. The room applauded. William clapped the loudest. Vincent made his way to the stage, accepting a certificate with a polite smile. For one brief moment... He looked like any other proud university student. Connor, watching from a VIP table near the front, studied him silently. As Vincent stepped down from the stage, another voice echoed through the ballroom. "Vincent." Jennifer approached in a floor-length emerald gown. She looked elegant without trying. William recognised her immediately. She smiled warmly. "You look nervous." Vincent laughed softly. "I am." "You'll survive." She gently straightened his bow tie. "There." William watched from across the room. He told himself it didn't bother him. Yet he couldn't stop looking. Music began to play. Couples slowly drifted toward the dance floor. Jake nudged William. "You should ask someone." William shook his head. "I'm good." His eyes wandered across the room. Landing on Vincent. Standing alone. Watching everyone else dance. Without thinking... William walked over. He held out his hand. "Dance with me." Vincent stared at him. "What?" "It's only one dance." "I don't dance." "Neither do I." William smiled. "We'll embarrass ourselves together." Vincent laughed. "You make terrible arguments." "They're working." After a long pause... Vincent placed his hand in William's. They stepped onto the dance floor. The music was slow. Neither of them knew the steps. William leaned in slightly. "I may have lied." Vincent looked up. "About what?" "I've never done this before." Vincent smiled. "Me neither." "So..." William shrugged. "We'll figure it out." Their movements were clumsy. Awkward. They accidentally stepped on each other's shoes more than once. Both laughed. Around them, elegant couples glided across the floor. Neither Vincent nor William noticed. For those few minutes... The ballroom disappeared. There were no expectations. No family names. No scholarships. No arranged futures. Only two friends... Laughing under the chandeliers. Across the room... Connor watched in silence. His fingers tightened around the stem of his wine glass. His assistant leaned closer. "Should I intervene?" Connor's eyes never left the dance floor. "No." His voice was dangerously calm. "Not yet." The music ended. Applause filled the ballroom. William released Vincent's hand. "I told you we'd survive." Vincent looked at him. "I think..." He smiled. "...that was actually fun." William's grin widened. "I'll remember you admitted that." As the evening continued, guests gathered for photographs. A photographer waved Vincent over. "Mr. Wynne! Your family is waiting." Vincent's smile faded. William noticed. Jennifer noticed too. Connor stood beside a large backdrop displaying the Wynne Jewellery Group logo. For the first time... William saw Vincent standing with one of the country's most powerful businessmen. His brow furrowed. He didn't understand. Not yet. But the pieces were beginning to move into place.
