Chapter 2: Confrontation

1817 Words
The next morning, Iris stood at the counter in the grand lobby of the Edelweiss Grand Hotel, feeling both nervous and determined. She wore the hotel’s uniform: a crisp white blouse, a tailored black skirt, and a blazer adorned with the hotel's emblem. Her hair was pulled back into a neat bun, and she wore minimal makeup, just enough to look professional. Despite her resolve, the previous night's events weighed heavily on her. She had barely slept, tossing and turning as she replayed the scene with Jacob over and over in her mind. But she was determined not to let it affect her performance today. This job was her lifeline, and she couldn't afford to lose it. She greeted the guests with a warm smile, efficiently checking them in and answering their questions. Her professionalism was impeccable, but the coldness from her colleagues was palpable. As she worked, she overheard snippets of conversation from the other employees. "Did you hear? She's the one who got made permanent. Can't believe they chose her," one of them whispered. "Probably felt sorry for her. She's such a sad case," another replied with a smirk. Iris kept her head down, trying to focus on her tasks. She couldn't afford to let their words get to her, but it was difficult not to feel the sting of their cruelty. Around midday, she made her way to the staff break room for a quick lunch. As she entered, the room fell silent. She could feel the eyes of her colleagues on her, judging her. Ignoring them, she sat down and unwrapped her sandwich. "Hey, Iris," a voice called out. She looked up to see Victoria, the woman who had sneered at her yesterday, standing there with a fake smile plastered on her face. "Enjoying your new position?" "It's fine, thank you," Iris replied cautiously. "Well, don't get too comfortable," Victoria said, her tone turning icy. "Not everyone thinks you deserve it." Before Iris could respond, Victoria and her friends burst into laughter, making Iris's face flush with anger and embarrassment. She quickly finished her lunch and left the break room, vowing to avoid it from now on. The rest of the day didn't go much better. In the afternoon, a guest approached the counter with a complaint about their room. Iris listened attentively, apologized, and promised to resolve the issue immediately. As she was handling the situation, Mr. Schneider approached, his expression thunderous. "Iris, a word," he barked. She followed him to a more private area, her heart pounding. "Yes, Mr. Schneider?" "I received a complaint about you being slow and inattentive," he said, his voice low and menacing. "We can't have that kind of performance here." "I’m sorry, Mr. Schneider. I was just addressing a guest’s concern about their room. I was trying to be thorough," Iris explained, trying to keep her voice steady. "Thorough? Don’t make excuses. Just do your job properly," he snapped before walking away. Feeling dejected, Iris returned to her post. The rest of the day was a blur of tasks and whispered insults. The office workers were relentless, making snide remarks whenever they passed by her. "Useless orphan," she heard one of them mutter under their breath. By the time her shift ended, Iris was exhausted, both physically and emotionally. She had done her best to maintain her composure, but the constant barrage of negativity had taken its toll. As she left the hotel, she took a deep breath, trying to shake off the day's events. She had survived her first day as a permanent employee, but it had been one of the hardest days she had ever faced. She knew she would have to find a way to navigate this hostile environment if she was going to keep this job and build a better future for herself. As Iris stepped into her tiny apartment, the weight of the day's events crashed down on her like a ton of bricks. She collapsed onto her worn-out couch, burying her face in her hands as tears streamed down her cheeks. The floodgates had opened, and there was no stopping the torrent of emotions that poured out of her. "Why does this always happen to me?" she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible over the sound of her sobs. "Why can't I catch a break?" Memories of her past flooded her mind, each one a painful reminder of the struggles she had faced. She remembered the taunts and jeers of her classmates in school, their cruel words cutting deeper than any blade. She remembered the loneliness of her childhood, the ache of not having a family to call her own. And then there were her parents, or rather, the absence of them. She had lost them both at a young age, their deaths leaving a void in her heart that had never fully healed. She remembered the nights spent crying herself to sleep, wishing for just one more moment with them. Now, here she was, a grown woman with a job and a roof over her head, yet still feeling just as lost and alone as she had all those years ago. The events of the day had triggered something deep within her, a well of pain and grief that she had thought she had buried long ago. "Why am I even trying?" she thought bitterly, her chest tightening with each ragged breath. "No matter what I do, it's never enough. I'll always be that orphan girl, unwanted and unloved." But even in the depths of her despair, a small voice inside her whispered words of encouragement. "You've come this far, Iris. You've faced worse than this, and you've survived. You're stronger than you think." Slowly, Iris began to calm down, her sobs subsiding into sniffles as she wiped away her tears. She took a shaky breath and forced herself to stand up, determined not to let the darkness consume her. "I won't let them break me," she vowed, her voice trembling but resolute. "I'll keep fighting, no matter what it takes. Because I refuse to let their cruelty define me." With newfound determination, Iris made her way to the kitchen and prepared herself a simple meal. Though her appetite was gone, she forced herself to eat, knowing that she needed to keep her strength up if she was going to face whatever challenges lay ahead. As she sat alone at her kitchen table, surrounded by the silence of her empty apartment, Iris made a silent promise to herself. She would not let the pain of her past or the cruelty of others dictate her future. She would rise above it all, stronger and more resilient than ever before. And with that, she took another bite of her meal, a small but significant step towards reclaiming her life and her sense of self-worth. No matter what obstacles lay in her path, Iris was determined to overcome them, one day at a time. The weekend brought with it a sliver of respite for Iris, a temporary escape from the suffocating atmosphere of the hotel. As she woke up to the soft light filtering through her curtains, she felt a glimmer of hope flicker within her. Maybe today would be better, she thought. Maybe today she could find some peace. But as she reached for her phone to check the time, her heart sank at the sight of multiple missed calls from Jacob. She had blocked his number the night before, but it seemed he was persistent in trying to reach her. Ignoring the urge to listen to his voicemails, Iris got up and began her morning routine. She moved through her small apartment with a sense of purpose, tidying up and preparing breakfast with mechanical precision. Each movement was a distraction, a way to keep her mind from dwelling on the pain and betrayal she had experienced. But even as she went about her tasks, Jacob's attempts to contact her lingered in the back of her mind like a dark cloud. She knew she couldn't keep avoiding him forever, but the thought of facing him filled her with dread. As she finished her chores, she heard the sound of the doorbell echoing through the apartment. Her heart skipped a beat, and she froze in place, the color draining from her face. She knew it was him, knew he wouldn't give up until he had his say. With trembling hands, Iris made her way to the door, her pulse pounding in her ears. She hesitated for a moment, her hand hovering over the doorknob, before finally summoning the courage to open it. And there he stood, Jacob, looking every bit as charming and deceitful as ever. His face was a mask of concern, but Iris could see the smugness lurking beneath the surface. "Iris, we need to talk," he said, his voice smooth and persuasive. Iris felt a surge of anger rise within her, threatening to consume her. How dare he show up here, after everything he had done? How dare he act like he had any right to her time or attention? But instead of lashing out, Iris remained silent, her jaw clenched in defiance. She refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing her break. Jacob's smile faltered, replaced by a glimmer of irritation. "Iris, don't be like this. We need to sort this out like adults." "Like adults?" Iris scoffed, her voice dripping with contempt. "Is that what you call cheating on me? Is that what you call humiliating me in front of everyone?" Jacob's facade cracked, his true colors shining through. "Oh please, Iris. You know as well as I do that you were never enough for me. I was just using you until something better came along." The words cut deep, like a knife to her already wounded heart. Iris felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She refused to let him see how much he had hurt her. Without another word, she slammed the door in his face, shutting him out for good. As she leaned against the door, her breath coming in ragged gasps, she felt a wave of sadness wash over her. She had known Jacob was toxic, had known he didn't truly care for her, but hearing it spoken aloud still stung. But even as the pain threatened to overwhelm her, Iris knew she couldn't let it consume her. She had faced worse in her life, and had overcome greater obstacles. She would survive this, too. And with that thought to hold onto, she pushed herself away from the door and began to rebuild her shattered world, one piece at a time. Why does Jacob persist in trying to contact Iris despite her blocking his number? What secrets lurk beneath the surface of Iris's past, driving her to keep her emotions hidden from Jacob?
