The two men stared at each other in complete silence. It was awkward, so Marcy broke it.
"I'm just gonna say it... You're.... Werewolves aren't you..."
Asher and Alex both turned their heads and stared at her with wide eyes.
They said nothing as they looked back at each other. The front doors of the fortress open and shut with a thud. Two men walked in and turned right down a hallway that probably led to the bedrooms. Another tall, masculine looking man came straight into the kitchen. It was him. The man in the nice car with the amazing smile. He and Marcy locked eyes and he stopped in his tracks.
"Who the hell is this?" His voice boomed angrily and Marcy jumped in surprise at such a deep, demanding voice.
"You're scaring her, Jackson," Alex finally let go of her. He got off the couch and climbed the two shallow steps to stand next to Jackson in the kitchen.
She let out a breath almost as if she had held it the whole time.
"No, Alexander Black, YOU were scaring her. You can't just get handsy with every woman you meet and not expect her to get upset," Asher scoffed.
"He used your whole ass government name, you're in trouble, " Jackson had an eyebrow raised looking at Alex.
Alex and Asher rolled their eyes.
"She knows about us, Jax," Alex sighed as he cut right to the chase. He searched Jackson's face, waiting for an angry reaction.
"WHAT. THE. HELL. I'm literally gone for a couple of hours to get the new fugitives and I come home to my two most professional and trustworthy, BEST FRIENDS might I add, to find that we've been exposed," Jackson laid into them, running his hand through his dark brown hair, he sighed in disbelief.
"She figured it out on her own, dude!" Asher chimed in, trying to smooth things over.
"No I think we helped, to be honest," Alex put his hands in the pockets of his sweat pants.
"Well you're not helping our situation right now--" Asher said but Marcy cut him off mid sentence.
"Umm... I think I should probably go!" Marcy stood and scurried to the back door Asher brought her in. She didn't make it but a few steps away from the couch when Jackson demanded loudly,
"Stop. Come here. Don't make me tell you twice."
Thinking if anything she read had some truth to it, that was his Alpha tone and that it was probably best to listen because usually that meant that an Alpha means business. She turned to face the men. Jackson had his left hand in his jacket pocket and motioned her towards him with a long finger from his right. He stood there waiting for her to approach him. She sized him up as she reluctantly walked to the kitchen where Jackson, in all his sexy, masculine glory, stood.
He wore a fitted, black leather jacket, that made him look like an actual bad ass, and his chest bulged out from beneath his tight, black v-neck. His straight-leg jeans were a faded grey-black. His dark brown hair was slicked back away from his face and styled in a faded pompadour. His face was slender and clean shaven and he had a jawline for days. Somehow he had perfectly shaped, bushy eyebrows.
Marcy stopped directly in front of him and looked at her dirty sandals.. then at his black & white checkered slip on Vans. Her eyes trailed up his body until she met his intense gaze. His eyes were like pools of honey. They didn't say anything. He raised an eyebrow at her. He seemed like he was waiting for her to do something.
Then he broke the silence, "So you figured our our little secret, hmm? So tell me, why are you here? Asher could've just killed you, ya know." Jackson crossed his arms while glaring at her.
"Well," she began explaining, "to start from the beginning, just so you've got my side of the story, I was camping with my two friends and they started arguing so I left to go for a walk to wait for things to smooth over.. I got lost following a baby deer and found my way to this river outside this... fortress. Then he," she pointed to Asher, "snuck up behind me and threw me over his shoulder as I was about to leave, brought me in here, interrogated me, then Alex came in, growled, his eyes turned black and then back to green. And I thought I was crazy. Then he tried to ask me questions but I yelled at him and then he SNARLED AT ME and wouldn't let me go and now I have this mark on my leg--" suddenly remembering the pain in her thigh, she winced and rubbed the marks Alex made.
"Also as embarrassed as I am to admit this... but I accidentally got addicted to werewolf love stories so... yeah.... it all came together. Who knew werewolves even existed," she blushed as she finished her long explanation.
"Yeah, we keep it secret for a reason. We don't wanna be dissected in a lab," Jackson watched her hand rubbing the area above her knee and grabbed her arm to move it and see what she was talking about. He lifted a finger and grazed the streaks on her thigh. It already started to turn blue and bruise.
"Sss! That hurts!" She hissed and move her leg away from him.
"Look what you did, Alex," He turned his head to look at Alex who was leaning against the counter,
Alex hadn't realized what he did to Marceline's leg. Alex went over to her and placed his hands under her armpits and effortlessly picked her up like a baby to put her onto the countertop.
"Werewolf love stories, eh?" Asher put his face in his hands, "Fan fiction did us in, guys. Who's even writing stuff like that?? She-wolves??"
"The whole being a werewolf thing really, really explains the super strength too," she said while they all gathered around her to examine her leg.
"You're really, not that heavy," Asher said, assuming she was talking about them picking her up.
"Sh*t, I'm sorry Marceline. Didn't mean to hurt you like that," Alex said sweetly. You could tell he was upset with himself.
"No you did us in, Asher! You could've just let her leave but you came out of the shadows and kidnapped her," Jackson chimed in.
Asher said defensively, "I was just being cautious! I thought she was a SPY."
"How'd you get that other cut on your knee? Did Asher do that, too? " Alex inquired picking up her leg with his big hands to get a closer look.
"I'm just clumsy... I fell," embarrassed, she pulled it away from him and covered her knee with her hands.
Jackson spoke up trying to face the harsh reality for the innocent girl in front of him, "Well you guys know the drill. When someone finds out about us we have to--"
"Kill... Me...?" She interrupted looking from Jackson to Asher to Alex.
They all looked at her.. Their serious faces seem to answer her question and a few tears streamed down her red cheeks. He heart thudded in her chest.
