Chapter eight : The First Spark

524 Words
She didn’t mean to come back here. The forest was different tonight—like it knew. The trees leaned in closer. The air was thicker, holding its breath. Every step Ava took echoed too loud, like she was trespassing in a place that had been waiting for her. And still… she walked. The old house rose out of the mist like a memory she hadn’t made yet. Broken stone. Splintered wood. Ivy like veins crawling up its bones. It should’ve been empty. But something clung to the ruins—something alive. Her skin prickled. She touched her chest where her heart thudded too fast, too hard. Why did she feel like she was being called? The door creaked as she pushed it open. The scent hit her first. Smoke. Spice. And something else—something male. Him. The man she met in the woods. The one who made her forget what she was. He shouldn’t be here. But his presence coated the air. Like he had pressed himself into the walls. She moved carefully, every sense burning. Her fangs itched, not from hunger, but from something else. Something she couldn’t name. And then she saw it. A mark, carved into the rotting wood of the wall. Sharp. Clean. Like a claw had done it. She traced it with shaking fingers. The lines pulsed with something old—older than her coven. Older than her father’s rules. A symbol she didn’t recognize… but her blood did. The moment she touched it, something shifted. A pulse. A jolt. Like something inside her had recognized it. Her breath caught. Her fingers trembled. She didn’t notice her reflection in the shattered glass at first. But when she turned, her eyes found it—and froze. Her irises were glowing. Not just red—gold. The edges sparked like embers, wild and wrong. Her skin shimmered faintly, like her body couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. She blinked, hard. It was gone. No. No, that wasn’t real. That didn’t just happen. A sound behind her. A breath. She spun, dagger drawn. No one. But she felt it—heat against her back, breath on her neck, a presence that made her knees weak. “Who’s there?” she whispered. The word cracked in her throat. No answer. But she wasn’t alone. Far above her, hidden in the trees, Darius clenched his fists. He had seen many things in his time. Monsters, gods, even the fall of covens. But he had never seen a vampire’s eyes shift like that—not just red. Glowing gold at the edges. Feral. Split. Hybrid. “No…” he breathed, stunned. “She doesn’t even know.” Ava turned sharply. For a second, she looked straight at where he stood—though she couldn’t possibly see him. Her eyes locked on the shadows. And in that moment, Darius didn’t know who was being watched. His breath caught. Something about her had changed. This wasn’t just another target. She wasn’t just a vampire girl wrapped up in secrets. She was the center of something ancient. Dangerous. And now… the prophecy was starting to burn.
