Rejection

I ran tirelessly towards the direction I knew like the back of my hand. I stopped a few meters away when I spotted Darius sitting by the lake. My heartbeat raced not because of the running I did but because the enticing scent got stronger. Mate! You’ve found our mate! Go to him quick! I want to see him. I want to feel him! Violet danced happily inside my head, purring and shifting her paws like a happy pup. I on the other hand, wanted to jump at him and bury my nose on the crook of his neck. I want to run my hands all over him and feel his eight pack abs that he religiously takes care of. Woah! Hold that thought! Where did that come from? Why am I acting like one horny b***h with my best friend? Like yeah, not that I didn’t notice how good looking and deliciously hot he is before, but it would be gross to drool and fantasize over the guy you grow up with, right? He’s almost like my own brother! It’s the mate pull, Hun. It’s normal to feel that need when you find your mate. A wolf’s mate bond is sacred and blessed by the goddess herself. My chest heaved and my hands turned sweaty. There’s no denying it anymore. Darius, my best friend is my mate! I tentatively walked towards him, taking care not to look weird despite my growing desire. Calm yourself Violet please. You aren’t helping me stay cool! To my amazement she just purred and rolled like a little tease she is. Damn b***h! I focused my attention to Darius and saw him lift his head up and chugged on a bottle of whiskey. Wait, is he getting drunk? What the heck? He threw the empty bottle to the river and it made a crashing sound and broke into pieces when it hit a rock. I stopped on my tracks and stepped back. Don’t be afraid. He is our mate. He’ll never hurt us. But he looked upset and angry… I argued with Violet. Go to him. He will calm down once he sees you. I blew the air I've been holding in to lessen my anxiety before I walk towards him. “D?” I called out. His back stiffened when he heard my voice but he didn’t turn around. “What are you doing here? It’s already so late at night. You shouldn’t be walking around outside. Go back to your house now. Aunt Mary must be worried.” He said in a deadly cold tone I wasn’t accustomed to. He turned around and walked past me without even looking at me. The strong scent of alcohol mixed with his sweet scent hit my nose. On instinct I grabbed his arm and forced him to turn to me. “D, I have something to tell you…” “I don’t want to hear it. Let’s go back.” “But D! Wait, are you angry at me? Why don’t you look at me?” Darius stopped. When he looked back I saw a pain flicker in his steal blue eyes, before it turned dark and cold. “Angry? Why would I be angry at you? I’m not angry at all.” “Then why are you being like this?” “You won’t understand.” He turned around and started to walk away again. What are you doing? Go after him! He’s hurting! Can’t you feel it? “Is it because I’m your mate? Are you being like this because I’m your destined mate? Don’t you want me?” “How’d you know?” “So you’ve known this before and you didn’t tell me?” “Yes! Why would I tell you? I don’t want you to be my mate! You’re a freaking human for Pete’s sake! How can I be mates with a mere human and what’s worst to a lesbian like you!” I felt a deep pain on my chest and my wolf whimpered as well. My eyes started to well up hot tears but I shook it off. No this must be a mistake. We’re best friends aren’t we? She-wolf or not, he can’t despise me! Tell him you’re a wolf too! He can’t hear me yet because he’s too intoxicated. Please do something Sylvie! We can’t lose our mate! “What the f**k are you saying? Aren’t mates meant to be together? How can you hate the idea of having me as your mate?” “Didn’t you hear what I said?” He briskly walked towards me and grabbed me by the arm. “I don’t want you as my mate Sylvie. You’re right. I’ve known about us being mates for three f*****g years. Do you know why I never touched you? I’ve never seen you as a woman, much more someone I could spend my whole life sharing my bed with.” My other hand flew right on his face. I just slapped my best friend! I was shocked and so was he. but I didn't see hate in them, instead his face softened. I inhaled sharply and tried to level out my head. “D… I’m not…” “I don’t know how you learned about us being mates but it’s never made to happen, Sylvie. I should’ve done this a long time ago.” Darius stood straight and looked at me in the eye. Gone was the softness. Now he looked detached. “I Darius Silverious of the Silvermoon pack reject you, Sylvie Matthews as my mate.” He let go of my arm, pushing me in the process then bolted for a run. My knees wobbled and I fell to the soft wet ground dumbfounded. I clutched my chest tightly as I felt like my heart is literally being torn to pieces. My tears welled and raced down my cheeks not just from the physical torment my body is feeling but from what Darius had done. He rejected me. He abandoned me. My best friend, the only man I trusted had turned his back on me because he despised the thought of us being mates. How can he do this to me? Another kind of excruciating pain hit my body and this time it wasn’t just from my chest. Every fiber of my body felt like it’s being ripped and torn to shreds. I screamed in agony as my bone snapped and cracked. “M-mom…” I called with my heavy breath. What’s happening to me Violet? I tried to call on my wolf but she didn’t respond. She just whimpered in pain. Someone, anyone… help me… “Ah!” I screamed again as my face started to change. My face shifted and stretched to a snout. I dug my hands on the ground trying to get strength from it but was surprised to see I had already dug deeper. I slumped back to the ground as I feel my consciousness escaping me. I’m tired. It hurts. I surrendered to the pain as my body twisted and completed the shift. When it was finally over, a low growl escaped me as I opened my eyes and saw the world differently. The moonlighted surrounding seemed clearer, the sounds crispier. I bowed to see my hands covered in white fur with silvery sparks. I moved towards the water and saw sad lavender eyes looking back at me. I have shifted to my wolf Violet. She’s breathtaking, but what difference does it make? Our mate had already rejected us because he thought I was but a mere human. I couldn’t help but snort at the irony. I have known him for as long as I can remember. He always surprised me in my birthdays. He never failed not even today. What a way to celebrate my birthday indeed. Could he be just pulling a prank on me? No Vie… it’s all true. You felt the pain didn’t you? You shifted because if you didn’t I could have died inside you because of it. Violet’s devastated voice lit a spark of hatred inside me. She whimpered and made a long sad sound as she looked down the water again. Her head hang low and tears formed in her eyes. No. Don’t cry. If he doesn’t want us, he didn’t deserve us. We’re better off mateless than be mated with a jerk like him. Violet gave me a small nod. She’s still hurting and so am I, but we can’t let it destroy us. She howled in misery for the rest of the night as I drifted off to oblivion, not even imagining that the worst is yet to come.
