The driver gave me a polite nod before quickly getting out of the car. A short while later, he returned with a plastic bag.
"Water, asthma inhalers—it's all here. By the way, an asthma attack causes difficulty exhaling accompanied by a wheezing sound. I just listened, and your breathing sounds completely normal. Besides, asthma patients always carry their inhalers with them. That's common knowledge."
With that, he tossed the bag into the backseat and restarted the car.
It took me a moment to realize what he had just done—he was blatantly pointing out that Celeste was faking it. I couldn't help but shoot him a curious glance.
Sure enough, Celeste sat up, looking somewhat embarrassed, but then pouted in grievance. "Dominic, I really don't feel well..."
After an eerie silence, Dominic met my gaze through the rearview mirror. "I know."
The night was too dark for me to see his eyes, which had instantly reddened with a flash of bitterness.
We soon arrived at our destination. I slowly stepped out of the car but stepped onto a sharp pebble on the curb. With my heels being too high, I instantly lost my balance and pitched forward toward the ground.
A hand reached out from behind, firmly steadying me. "Careful."
I turned around in pleasant surprise, only to find that the person behind me was the driver, who had gotten out of the car at some point.
Dominic stood less than a meter away, his expression completely indifferent. He had made no move to catch me at all. Instead, a mocking smirk curled his lips. "Seraphina, you sure are popular with the opposite sex."
Without another word, he scooped Celeste up again and walked toward the house without looking back.
I nodded my thanks to the driver, paid him, let out a long breath, and turned to leave. Even after walking a good distance, I couldn't shake the feeling of a burning gaze locked onto my back. But when I turned around, there was nothing there.
Dragging my exhausted body, I stepped through the door just as a text from Holly popped up on my screen.
Holly: Seraphina, are you seriously going to stand there and watch Dominic and that homewrecker act all lovey-dovey right in front of you?
I looked up to see the two of them already tangled up together on the sofa. Celeste had her arms wrapped tightly around Dominic's body, her eyes glazed with a hazy gaze. Dominic, holding the back of her head, looked at her with eyes brimming with tenderness.
It was like watching a romantic drama reaching its sweetest c****x, and I was just an extra who had shown up at the wrong time. Digging my nails deep into my palms, I resignedly walked toward the bedroom.
Suddenly, Dominic let go of Celeste and followed me. "What? Can't bear to watch?" he asked, a hint of cruelty in his eyes.
I shook my head. "Didn't you just bring her back here to intentionally show off your affection in front of me? Dominic, don't you think using this kind of method to provoke me is a bit despicable?"
What was meant to be an interrogation ended up coming out as a tearful complaint. I turned my head, not wanting him to see the tears welling in my eyes.
But Dominic didn't give me the chance. He forcefully grabbed my chin, making me face him. Wearing a provocative smirk, his tone was domineering. "Don't want to watch? Well, you're going to have to endure it."
He patted my cheek. "Seraphina, this is what you get for loving me."
His face was full of contempt and triumph. I bit my lip hard and glared back at him.
He smiled in satisfaction. "Yes, exactly like that. You look just like a delicate little innocent right now. Makes it impossible for me to let you go."
His warm breath brushed against my cheeks as his lips slowly descended toward mine.
I shrank back.
"Seraphina, after all these years, who exactly do you see when you look at me?" His tone suddenly turned fierce just a split second before our lips met.
I looked at him in shock. "What did you say?"
Suddenly, the sharp sound of something shattering echoed from the living room.
"Ah! It hurts!"
