Gram was absent from both her usual spots. Her presence seemed to be missing from every room I walked into; a strange, unsettling silence replacing the typical comforting feeling of our home. As I ventured further into the house, I could discern a strange, barely-there sound – a light whining, as if emitted by a wounded creature. It was a sound wholly foreign to the house; a place typically filled with love, laughter and the smell of freshly baked goodies. My heart pounded in my chest with a sudden, intense rush of anxiety. Something was off, I could feel it in my veins. Guided by my instinct, I moved towards Gram’s room, the soft whimpering getting louder the closer I got. I entered the room hesitantly; it felt like I was trespassing on a very personal space. Unless absolutely necessary
