Nolan stared at his phone screen, feeling uneasy as his father's name appeared boldly on it. After a moment of hesitation, he decided to pick up the call.
“Hello, Father. It’s a beautiful day. How are you doing today?” Nolan asked, choosing his words carefully. He was honestly tired of their recent arguments concerning him getting married as his father brings the matter up in every conversation.
“I’m not doing badly, son. Just waiting for my lawyer to arrive,” Wilson replied promptly.
“So before my lawyer arrives, I want to know if my son has agreed to get married before my sixtieth birthday, or should I go ahead and will the family business to Mark Harry?” Wilson asked. The weight of his question sent Nolan's heart into turmoil, ruining the happiness he had felt only moments before with Erin.
“Father, don’t you dare will my inheritance to anyone, dead or alive,” Nolan retorted through gritted teeth, his voice filled with anger.
After a brief silence, Wilson said, “Then get married son and that will solve it.”
“Don’t worry, Father. You’ve said this before, and I took it seriously. I will get married before your sixtieth birthday or is that not all you wanted,” Nolan inquired.
“Very good then. I’m proud of you, son. But remember, the deal is to marry a woman from a wealthy background. At least she should be educated enough to have proper manners. Your father is getting older, so I want someone I can proudly call my daughter-in-law in public. I don’t have the energy to start educating some sort of uncultured woman.”
“Fine Father, if that's all you want then that is a deal,” Nolan boldly declared. “I have a lot on my plate, so I have to go now. Have a nice day, Father.”
As the frustrating phone call ended, Nolan knew his father meant every word he said. If he dares not marry someone of their status, his father would surely find ways to frustrate his wife.
Nolan groaned in frustration, knowing he couldn’t bear to see anyone cause Erin any kind of pain. He knows that his father was a talk-and-do kind of person. someone who wouldn’t hesitate to make Erin's life miserable once she is married into their family. Of course, they wouldn't live together, but his father he knows, must definitely find a way to make Erin's life a living hell. And that's what Nolan can bear to witness.
In mere seconds, the memory of a lady who had visited his office last week crossed his mind. He tapped his forehead, squinting his eyes as he tried hard to recall her name. He remembered her last name because her father’s company was collaborating with his own to develop an app.
“Yes!” Nolan exclaimed, barely containing his excitement as he remembered that the lady had left her business card with him.
He rushed to his bedroom, his happiness building as he recalled the briefcase he had taken to work that day. Getting to the briefcase. He searched through it thoroughly and finally found her card.
“Yes, Valeria Rodriguez, how could I have forgotten” he uttered, sighing in relief as he read the name on the card.
Valeria was the only person who could save him from the impending disaster. They shared a similar fate: she is also an heiress to a fortune.
Last week, Her father had sent her to Nolan’s office last week to deliver a document. That day, After discussing business matters with Nolan, Valeria unexpectedly opened up to him about her personal life.
She expressed her disdain for marriage, and Valeria revealed that her father had threatened to cut off her inheritance if she didn’t marry soon.
Valeria had mentioned her plan to enter a contract marriage, intending to divorce after three months to satisfy her father and after securing her inheritance.
After reflecting on the card in his hand, Nolan concluded that Valeria could help him achieve what he wanted, he knew with Valeria in the picture, he could eat his cake and still have it.
He dialed the eleven digits on the card and pressed the green button, the call connecting with a beep.
“This is Nolan Wilson speaking,” he introduced himself after hearing a feminine voice on the other end.
“I will help you get your inheritance,” he stated.
“How?” Valeria asked, intrigued.
“Marry me.”
“What? Are you drunk or something?” Valeria asked with the shock that came by his proposal.
Nolan inhaled sharply, her question irritating him. He is not the type that should be disrespected by a woman, no woman dares question Him. Yet, knowing she was his only option, he chose his words carefully.
“Do I sound drunk to you?” he inquired, boiling with anger inside, but still keeping his tune cool.
“No,” she answered after a moment of consideration.
“Let’s get married under a contract and then divorce after three months, once you’ve received your inheritance. Isn’t that what you’ve been wanting?” Nolan clarified firmly.
“Yes, that’s what I wanted,” Valeria replied.
“So?” Nolan pressed, seeking a straightforward answer.
“Yes, let’s get married,” Valeria finally agreed.
“Meet me at Mesion Sabika by 8 PM for our proposal. I understand this is a fake marriage, but I want it to appear real to our parents. I will text you the details.”
As Nolan ended the call, he scrolled through his contact list and then stopped at a particular name. Micheal Lucas is the head of the HR department of his company.
He put a call through to Michael.
Nolan spoke promptly as Micheal picked up “Michael, I don't want to be questioned and I know it's the weekend” Nolan clarified.
“ I want you to prepare a sack letter and email it to my secretary, Erin Crawford, by 10 pm.” He commanded. And hung up.
