🌙 PART SIX : When Distance Starts Growing

1150 Words
After Sophia’s return, things changed between them. Not instantly. Not dramatically. But slowly enough to hurt more. Daniel still texted her. Still called. Still tried. But Evelyn noticed the difference in him now. His replies sometimes came later than usual. His mind seemed elsewhere during conversations. And worst of all… she could feel herself overthinking every little thing again. One evening, she finally asked the question she had been avoiding for days. “Are you talking to her again?” Daniel looked up at her quietly. “She reached out unexpectedly.” “That’s not what I asked.” A heavy silence followed. Then Daniel admitted softly: “Yes. We’ve talked.” Evelyn’s chest tightened painfully. “How often?” Daniel hesitated. Too long. And that hesitation alone hurt more than the answer itself. “Daniel.” “A few times.” Evelyn nodded slowly, pretending the words did not affect her. But inside, she already felt something cracking. Because now every fear she tried to bury was coming back stronger than before. The fear of not being enough. The fear of being temporary. The fear of being loved only until someone familiar returned. Daniel noticed her expression immediately. “Evelyn—” “It’s okay,” she interrupted quickly. But her voice sounded fragile now. And they both heard it. Daniel moved closer. “You know I care about you.” That should have comforted her. Instead, it hurt. Because care was no longer enough anymore. Not when feelings had already become this deep. That night, Evelyn cried quietly after getting home. Not because Daniel had done something terrible. But because for the first time since falling for him… she realized love could disappear just as easily as it arrived. And that thought terrified her completely. 🌙 CHAPTER 18: The Night Evelyn Finally Broke Down Evelyn spent the next few days pretending she was fine. Pretending became a habit for her long ago. Smiling when she felt anxious. Laughing when she felt insecure. Saying “I’m okay” when she was quietly falling apart inside. But emotions do not stay hidden forever. Eventually, they demand to be felt. That night, Daniel noticed immediately that something was wrong. “You’ve been avoiding me,” he said softly during their call. “I’ve just been tired.” “Evelyn.” The way he said her name nearly broke her instantly. Because he always sounded worried when it came to her. And that somehow made everything harder. “I don’t know how to do this,” she whispered suddenly. Daniel became quiet. “Do what?” “This,” she admitted weakly. “Feeling this much.” The silence on the other side of the call felt heavy now. Evelyn pressed her hand against her forehead, trying to steady herself. “I hate how affected I am by everything lately,” she continued shakily. “I hate overthinking every small change. I hate wondering if I’m going to lose you.” Daniel’s voice softened immediately. “You’re not losing me.” “But what if I do?” she asked, her voice finally cracking. That was the moment everything inside her collapsed. Tears slipped down her cheeks quietly as she covered her mouth to stop herself from crying too loudly. “I wasn’t supposed to get this attached to you,” she whispered painfully. Daniel stayed silent for a moment before speaking again. And when he did, his voice sounded almost emotional too. “Evelyn…” She closed her eyes tightly. Because deep down, she already knew the truth. The more you love someone… the more power they have to destroy you. 💖 The Stranger She Met in Silence 🌙 CHAPTER 19: The Confession She Was Afraid to Hear After Evelyn broke down that night, something changed between them again. But this time, it wasn’t distance. It was honesty. The kind people avoid because once certain truths are spoken out loud… nothing stays the same afterward. Daniel came to see her the next evening. The moment Evelyn opened the door and saw him standing there, her chest tightened painfully. He looked tired. Not physically. Emotionally. Like he had spent the entire night thinking too much too. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Daniel finally stepped closer. “You’ve been crying,” he said quietly. Evelyn looked away immediately. “I’m fine.” “You always say that when you’re not.” Her throat tightened. Daniel gently lifted her chin until she looked at him again. And suddenly, all the emotions she spent days trying to hide felt impossible to control. “I don’t know what’s happening to me,” she admitted softly. Daniel’s expression softened instantly. “Yes, you do.” The honesty in his voice scared her. Because she did know. She was falling in love with him. Completely. Irreversibly. And that terrified her more than heartbreak itself. Daniel looked at her carefully for a long moment before speaking again. “I need you to listen to me.” Evelyn’s heart began beating faster. Because deep down, she already knew this conversation would change everything. Daniel exhaled slowly. “When Sophia came back, it confused me for a moment,” he admitted honestly. “Not because I still wanted her… but because she reminded me of a version of my life I thought I had already left behind.” Evelyn felt pain twist inside her chest anyway. Daniel noticed immediately. “But none of that changed how I feel about you,” he continued softly. Evelyn looked at him silently. “You’re the first person in a long time who makes me feel understood,” he whispered. “The first person who feels real to me.” Her eyes began stinging with tears again. Because all this time, she kept preparing herself for him to leave. But now he was standing in front of her, trying to stay. Daniel stepped even closer. “So stop trying to convince yourself that you care more than I do.” Evelyn’s breath caught instantly. Because that was exactly what she had been doing. Every single day. Daniel’s eyes stayed locked on hers as he spoke the words she was least prepared to hear. “I’m in love with you, Evelyn.” The world around her suddenly felt still. Completely still. For a moment, she could not breathe. Could not think. Could not speak. Because hearing those words from him felt both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Daniel looked nervous now, like he regretted saying it too soon. But Evelyn finally realized something important in that moment. Love was always going to be frightening. Not because it hurts. But because it matters enough to. Tears slipped quietly down her cheeks as she stared at him. And for the first time since meeting Daniel… she stopped running from what she felt.
