Chapter 1: Good News Spoiled By An Unwelcomed Confrontation

1599 Words
Prologue She gave him her loyalty... He gave her a prison cell and rejection. For three years, Gloria endured the cruel scorns of the Grey Wood Pack. As a "weak human" Luna, she worked twice as hard to be perfect for her fated mate, Alpha Hunter. Her only heartbreak was her inability to produce an heir—a failure that threatened Hunter’s seat on the prestigious Alpha Council. Then comes the miracle. After countless failed IVF attempts, Gloria finally hears the words she has prayed for: You are pregnant. But her joy is brutally shattered before she can even share the news. Waiting outside is Charlotte, the Beta’s arrogant daughter, boasting that she is already carrying Alpha Hunter’s child. When confronted, Hunter coldly defends his betrayal, claiming Charlotte is merely a surrogate to secure his legacy. Before Gloria can reveal her own pregnancy, a vicious trap is sprung. Framed by Charlotte and Hunter's family for an attack on the unborn heir, Gloria is rejected by her fated mate. Hunter chooses Charlotte's lies over his mate's innocence, throwing a pregnant Gloria into the pack's dark dungeons while he prepares to crown Charlotte as his new Luna. Starved, weakened, and facing Charlotte’s poison in the dead of night, Gloria accepts her death. But execution turns into salvation when Alpha Leonard Jones of the formidable Dark Silver Pack intervenes. Leonard didn't just expose Hunter's betrayal—he recognized the bleeding, broken human woman as his own fated mate... her second-chance mate. Whisked away to the safety of the Dark Silver Pack, Gloria begins to heal under Leonard’s fierce protection. But as her strength returns, a dangerous truth begins to unravel. The Moon Goddess never gives a mere human a second-chance mate... unless Gloria isn't human at all. Gloria’s POV “Can you repeat that, please, Doc?” I asked Dr Wilson softly, my heart hammering in my chest. She smiled at me brightly. “Your ears are not failing you, Luna. You heard me correctly. Congratulations! You are pregnant!” Dr. Wilson radiated pure happiness for me. She was one of the few people who knew exactly what I had gone through to finally hear those three perfect words. You are pregnant. I repeated those beautiful words in my mind as a slow, emotional smile spread across my face. I had lost count of how many procedures I’d gone through to finally give Hunter the heir he needed to solidify his standing in the Alpha Council. Countless, painful procedures. Being the only human in the pack, and their Luna, life hadn't been easy for me. Hunter found me after I graduated from university three years ago, when I started as an intern in the company he runs in the human world. Before I met him, I knew nothing about fated mates or werewolf traditions. But the minute he laid eyes on me, he claimed I was his destined mate. I admit, I was instantly attracted to my ridiculously hot Alpha, but I was also terrified. I had no idea what was waiting for me. In fact, I initially thought he might be a psychotic stalker, but something deep inside told me that this felt right. So, I let him pursue me, and I fell head over heels in love with that man. Hunter Nick… the Alpha of the Grey Wood Pack… my pack, my Alpha. A pack that hated my existence simply because I was a mere human. But I was determined to prove my worth. I worked my fingers to the bone to be the perfect Luna, though my attempts often felt futile. Even when I stabilized the pack financially using my knowledge of investments, they still looked down on me because I lacked a wolf. When I visited the sick and elderly, I was turned away. When I volunteered at the hospital in what little spare time I had, I was met with cold glares. Nothing I did was ever good enough, but I am no quitter. The only thing Hunter truly longed for was an heir, and that had become my dream for us, too. He wanted to join the Alpha Council, but without a pup, he wasn't eligible. I loved Hunter with all my heart, and he treated me like the center of his universe. So, naturally, we tried everything for a baby. That was why I was here with Dr Wilson after trying IVF countless times. We tried the natural way, too. Believe me, we did. Multiple delicious times a day. We could never keep our hands off each other. It was out of character for me, but I suppose that's the power of the mate bond. Me not having a wolf didn’t mean I didn’t feel the bond; I felt it like a constant, pulsing need in my veins. But that’s a story for another day. Right now, I feel so happy I could explode. “How far along am I?” I asked, snapping myself out of my inner thoughts. “Well, just over three weeks, which also means that you conceived naturally. The timing between your recent procedures and testing proves that. I am truly happy for you, Gloria. I want to see you back here in two weeks. But please remember…” she started, but I smiled, cutting her off. “If I feel like anything is wrong, I must come see you immediately. I know, Doc, you are my very own drill sergeant,” I finished for her, making her laugh. “Someone has to make sure you keep yourself and the Alpha heir safe and healthy.” She handed me a copy of my results, explaining what symptoms to look out for and what foods to avoid. I had already done endless research so I would be ready for this moment. I knew exactly what to do. I would keep this baby safe. “Now, go! Share your news with the Alpha,” she added, making me giggle. I stopped at the door, glancing back at her. “Doc?” She looked up from her notes. “Yes, Luna.” “Can you please keep this completely confidential? I don’t want Hunter to find out any other way than from me.” “Of course, Luna. You don’t even have to ask. Now go, and remember, no stress,” she said in a stern, maternal tone. “Yes, Doc,” I said, smiling as I tucked the results into my bag and stepped out. Before I could even exit the obstetrics floor, I spotted Charlotte Pope. She was impeccably dressed, as usual, in designer brands. She is the Beta’s daughter and an all-around b***h. She never hid her contempt for me because I was human, although she acted like she liked me whenever Hunter was around. I knew my human status wasn't the only reason she hated me; it was because of Hunter. She wanted him, and it pissed her off that he was fated to a 'weak, pathetic human'. Her words, not mine. I was anything but weak and pathetic, but I tried to remain civil for the sake of pack. I wondered what she was doing on this floor. Maybe she had finally found her mate. The way she was clutching her belly suggested she might be pregnant. Before I could slip away to avoid a confrontation, she spotted me and strutted over. “If it isn't the pathetic human playing at Luna. If you are here, it must mean another failed attempt at producing an heir for Hunter,” she sneered, invading my personal space. “You know, you really are useless. You give all humans a bad name. But we will soon be rid of you.” “Charlotte, it's always an unpleasant surprise to see you. Did you finally find your mate?” I asked, trying to rein in my intense contempt for this vile woman. She had outward beauty, but it was only skin-deep. Inside, she was arrogant and rotten. “I don’t need a mate. I have everything I need right here. My little ticket to your position and your man,” she answered with a malicious smirk, rubbing her flat stomach. A cold dread pooled in my chest. What is she talking about? “You know what? I don’t have time for your games. I have somewhere I need to be,” I answered, because instinct told me I wasn't going to like the next words out of her mouth. “You come here more than you do anywhere else. And for what? Your futile attempts are a source of humor for the entire pack. You will never be able to give Hunter an heir…” she taunted. I was about to cut her off to proudly tell her that I had just succeeded, but I bit my tongue. Hunter deserved to know first. “...whereas I managed to succeed on the first try,” Charlotte continued, her words striking me like a physical blow. “I am carrying the one and only rightful heir to the pack, and soon, I will take your position as Luna.” My heart rate spiked to a terrifying rhythm. “Wh… What did you just say?” I stuttered, my eyes widening in horror. “You heard me, b***h. I am carrying Hunter’s pup. I have Hunter and his family’s full support, and I will make sure he tosses you out in the cold,” she said with a victorious, wicked smirk. No. I refused to believe it. Hunter would never do this to me.
