Chapter 2: A Mate’s Betrayal

1344 Words
Gloria’s POV I turned away from Charlotte, not wanting to hear her words. I would never trust anything from her mouth. She exists to hurt me with her words and actions. I need to speak to Hunter. Surely she is lying. Hunter would never betray our bond like that. He loves me. I am his and he is mine. That is what he always says. He has never given me a reason not to believe him. “Where are you going, human! I am not done with you yet. Stick around, and I will tell you exactly how I came to carry the packs only heir,” she mocks after me, but I block her out. I need to speak to Hunter. My feet move automatically, like someone that is moving on autopilot. My heart is breaking at her words, but I will not believe her until I speak to Hunter. I rush out of the hospital like a mad woman, ignoring the looks and whispers that follow me. I am sure my daze is just adding fuel to the pack members' fire. I probably look unhinged, but I don’t care. I feel unhinged and so, so confused, I may not be a werewolf, but surely I would have felt if Hunter was unfaithful. Wouldn’t I? f**k! My driver is waiting outside, but I know he has no love for me. “Back to the pack, and hurry, please.” I say as I get in. He just grunts and starts the car. I throw my bag down and look out of the window. Could this really be true? What about me and our baby? I looked around and noticed that this fucker was taking a longer route back. “Can you please hurry? I don’t have time for sightseeing,” I say, but he ignores me and keeps driving. f*****g asshole. I can drive myself, but Hunter feels like I need protection when I leave the pack. And my safety is always a top priority for him, so I agreed. When we finally pull up, I don’t even wait for the driver to stop properly, before I grab my bag and jumped out. In my haste, some of the contents of my bag spilled out, but I couldn’t give a f**k. I am the only one that uses that car, so I can get it some other time. I need to see Hunter and confront him about what I just heard. I march into the house, ignoring the whispers of the staff and pack members around me. I marched straight to Hunter’s study, and barged in without knocking. I have never had to knock before, and I certainly won’t now. I was very pissed to see that Hunter’s mother, sister and a smug-looking Charlotte were already there. Is that why the driver took the longer route? So they can beat me here? “Gloria? What’s wrong, baby. You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Come here,” Hunter says the minute he sees me. “Hunter, please tell me that what Charlotte said is not true. Please tell me that you did not betray our bond,” I say in as steady a voice as I can muster. Hunter’s eyes widened, as he looked from me to Charlotte. Her smug look is suddenly replaced by a frail, innocent look. “I am sorry, Hunter. She was so mean to me at the hospital, I had no choice. I feared she might hurt the baby,” Charlotte says in a pitiful voice, clutching her belly. “She is lying. I did not touch her or say anything. She accosted me. I don’t give a f**k about her lies. Tell me it’s not true, Hunter,” I say, and he looks at me. “I did not betray our bond, I never would. You know I love you. You are my mate and my Luna,” he says, making me release the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. He pulls me into his arms and I go willingly and melt into his embrace. I knew he would never betray me. “Why are you coddling her? She needs to hear the truth, Hunter. Charlotte needs to be stress-free and this human needs to know her place,” his mother says, causing me to stiffen in Hunter’s hold. I step back and he reluctantly lets me go. “Hunter?” I whisper. “Charlotte is pregnant with my heir,” he says after looking at me for a long minute. “So you did betray our bond and lied to my face?” I ask as my heart rate rises again. “No, let me finish. Charlotte was chosen as a surrogate to carry my heir because of her strong bloodline. She has Alpha and Beta blood, ensuring that my heir will be powerful. It’s the only way for the pack… for me to join the Alpha Council. Your human body is too weak to carry an Alpha pup. But that does not change your standing as my Luna and mate. We will raise this pup together with Charlotte,” he says, and every word feels like a knife in my heart. “You expect me to raise her child? What about our ba…” I asked, about to tell him my secret, but he cut me off. “I expect you to act as my mate and Luna. This is for the further development of the pack. Our pack.” “You betrayed our bond, and now you expect me to just accept it and go on like nothing happened?” “You are being childish, and not acting like a Luna. The growth of the pack should come first, and this is the only move I had left. I did not betray our bond. I told you, Charlotte is a surrogate, and the procedure was done at the hospital. The same as your failed ones,” he says, his harsh words giving me another hard blow to my heart. “It’s still a betrayal to our sacred bond, and you never thought about consulting me. What am I to you then? I have been trying for years to give you the heir you need. I lost track of how many painful procedures I endured, for you. And now that I finally am…” I say, but was cut off by his vicious sister. “Stop saying useless things to gain sympathy. You had to undergo those procedures because your useless human body cannot perform the simple task of producing an heir. Whereas Charlotte was successful in her first try. You are not worthy of my brother, and you never will be. Charlotte is the perfect Luna and her pregnancy will be announced in a few days. The pack will rejoice, and you will know your place, human,” his sister spits, sneering at me. “Are you just going to allow her to speak to me like that?” I asked Hunter, and he sighed, clearly annoyed by this entire exchange. “Stop speaking to Gloria like that, Annie. She is your Luna, and Charlotte, carrying my heir, is not going to change that.” He tells her, then turns to me. “Gloria, this is for the pack. Not everything is about you. I have a duty to the pack too. I need this to work so I can join the Alpha council. Start acting like a Luna and put the needs of the pack before your own. I have made my choice, it can’t be undone. Now, I have work to do. Find a way to get along,” he says, walking back to his desk, taking my heart with him. How can he be so cold to me? The minute he turns around, all three women smirk at me. My heart, which already felt battered and bruised, now feels like it's about to break. But I can see by the look in their eyes, they aren't done humiliating me yet.
