CHAPTER SEVENTEEN The next morning’s hike was more of the same: magnificent views, crazy switchbacks on the trail, ups and downs and ups again. We forded another stream and kept going until we came to the campsites at Hanakoa. It was evident someone had been here last night, so I guessed Conroy had been right to camp where we’d been. Just past the campsite was another stream, the Hanakoa. I watched as Conroy and then Owen in front of me forded it. Hugh was in sweep position again today. Suddenly Conroy turned left and disappeared. When I got to the spot where he’d turned, I couldn’t figure out how he’d known where to go into the overgrown plant life, but soon I noticed the occasional bright pink ribbon tied to a twig. I had to assume we were headed inland for the Hanakoa Falls. Conroy
