Chapter 4
Brandt –
I tossed and turned all night, I couldn’t stop thinking about my new wife. I didn’t mean to be this way, so callous, just loving me wasn’t possible. I knew I had to do something, I couldn’t just let her ruin her life being married to me, I decided to make a plan to see the Seer Malik tomorrow and maybe she could find a way out for me.
Before I knew it the sun was rising outside, “another night and not a wink of sleep”. I quickly got up and threw on some clothes. All that was on my mind was getting to the Seer, I had to release her from my life. Such a beautiful woman could never stay here with me, I was crazy to think she might want me. I looked in the mirror “man I look like s**t”, I ran my fingers through my wavy brown hair, but it just flopped down in my eyes again.
As I entered the kitchen Isla was already there, sitting at the bay window, coffee in hand. She looked gorgeous, unlike any other girl here. She was dainty and feminine, my mind wandered to the first night we were together as a married couple. She was naked, yet in the moment of embarrassment I didn’t focus on the perfect woman in front of me. I now could remember the way her long hair grazed her hips, the arch in her back could perfectly fit my palm. Her skin, so many freckles dotted her, I became jealous of the sun as its gotten to kiss that body many more times than me.
“Brandt...” Her words sent lightening through my skin.
“I’m sorry, what is it?”
“I just wanted to tell you that there is coffee and fresh fruit in the kitchen for you, if you’re hungry.”
“Well I’m not.” There I go, callous is just my nature. I wish I wasn’t like that, not with her anyway. Without another word I just moved towards the door catching a glimpse of the cut fruit arranged on a plate for me to pick from.
Outside I called for Asmund to join me for my journey to the Seer. He came from around the corner with horses in hand. I reached for my horse, Aesir, he was a strong draft horse with a dapple grey coat. His mane was pure black, and his tail matched, he was given to me as a gift because his beauty was worthy of a royal God and his strength could overcome any war horse he was faced against. He has been my loyal friend for many years, I let my head rest against his as I apologized for my absence for the past coupe of days.
“Lets go lover boy” Asmund was already mounting his mare. I hopped on Aesir and started to lead the way to mystic spring, where we will find the Seers cave.
“How was the first night?” Asmund begun to question. I just groaned.
“I couldn’t have been that bad, I mean, you’ve had a lot practice” He scoffed at me, letting out a playful grin.
“I couldn’t get it up.” I let those words barely whisper out, hoping he wouldn’t pick up on them.
“YOU WHAT!” He stopped abruptly and I could feel his eyes like daggers on me. I motioned for him to follow.
“Couldn’t get it up for her. We went to bed and she started undressing, any other girl and it would have been game over. I just felt awkward, like I wanted this to be special for her. We still consummated the marriage, but, I don’t know.” I began rubbing my neck, I didn’t want Asmund to see my face because I knew I was flush.
“Well I can’t give you any advice, or I could, but who wants advice from a virgin. What’s so different about her? I mean she looks like any other human.”
“That’s the thing, she doesn’t look ordinary. Every beautiful feature on her is exaggerated and pulling me in.” Asmund was quiet for a second.
“Then why are we going here, you are made to love her.” His words hurt me because I knew I would never find another like her. It would destroy me, but she’d be free.
“I can’t ruin her life like that. I destroy everything, I don’t mean to. It just comes with the territory. Plus, what girl wants to stay married to the God of War, it’s not the most glamorous lifestyle.” With that being said the rest of the trip was made in silence. It was the first time I’ve said that I was the God of War out loud. I really wasn’t that. I couldn’t control generals or determine when war would break out. I was, though, the God of strategy, manipulation, and strength, all the things that make up a good war. The mortal and ancient villagers gave me that tarnishing name. They feared me on Terra plant for wiping out entire armies in under 24 hours, and they feared me here for being the savoir in all battles. Either planet they feared me for being the monster they named me to be.
We came to a trickling spring, I dismounted Aesir and took his bride off so he could graze. I started towards the mountainside, but just as I was about to take a look into a cave a voice greeted me from behind.
“Brandt, the chosen one, I’ve been waiting for you” I turned to see her grinning at me. Malik was unlike the other Seers she was outcasted thousands of years ago for betraying Father. She was welcomed back into the village but refused. She said she wasn’t a pawn to the Gods as an outcast.
“Malik, I need answers” I walked towards her to help her into her cave. She was nearly blind now. As a seer every time you look into what the fates have woven you lose a piece of yourself. Malik is slowly losing her vision in this realm.
“Have you met her?”
“Yes, I’ve married her.” I let Malik take a seat near the fire.
“Then I cannot help you my child. You have already woven your threads together.” I felt the rage shoot through my body like venom. I quickly stood balling my fists up.
“You have to do something!” I began shouting in a fit of rage, pacing the length of the cave. I could feel my blood boil, the heat rise in my chest. My skin began to burn.
“ENOUGH, you will NOT come to my home and demand things from me.” Malik hissed those words at me. If she wasn’t an outcast, she would be compelled to do something, but she doesn’t have to bow to me. I hit me knees pleading with her, still burning with rage.
“Please, you have to do something. You can not let her ruin her life, you can’t let her become cold…like me” Malik put her hand to my face.
“My child, I can’t do anything because your threads aren’t just individual strains wrapped around each other, they are torn down and built back into one strand. You know as much as I do that if Yggdrasill determined it to be that way, there is nothing you can do. Have you even asked her how she feels about this?”
I could only shake my head, I haven’t asked her. I didn’t care to be frank, I knew what was best for her and it was not me. I turned to take my leave.
“Brandt,” my walking paused “you will become King sooner than you hope, learn to worship your Queen.”
