Chapter 2

What do you think would make you happy?" Sophia thought for a moment. "I don't know...I guess I just want to be happy, to find someone who loves me for who I am." Her friend smiled. "You deserve that, Sophia. And I think you're on the right path. You're working hard, making new friends...just take it one step at a time, okay?" Sophia nodded, feeling a sense of hope. Maybe her friend was right. Maybe she just needed to focus on herself for a while. As they chatted, Sophia's friend mentioned a party she was attending that weekend. "You should come! It'll be fun, and it'll take your mind off things." Sophia hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Okay, sure. I'll come." Her friend grinned. "Great! I'll send you the details." As Sophia left the café, she felt a sense of excitement. Maybe this party would be just what she needed to shake off her sadness and start living again. Meanwhile, Ethan's struggles continued. Rachel's demands for attention were getting louder, and Ethan felt like he was losing his grip on reality. He needed a break, but he didn't know where to turn. Ethan sat by the pool, sipping his drink as the sun set behind him. The mansion was quiet, except for the sound of the water lapping against the edge of the pool. He stared out at the water, lost in thought. As he sat there, memories began to flood his mind. He remembered Sophia, his girlfriend back in school. They were happy, carefree. He recalled the day he and Sophia talked on the phone, discussing their plans for the future. But as he thought about Sophia, another face crept into his mind. Rachel's. They were best friends in university, and he trusted her with his life. He remembered the day she walked into his office, and they hugged each other like they always did. Rachel had chatted with him for a bit, and he recalled thinking how nice it was to catch up with his old friend. But little did he know, Rachel had been harboring feelings for him. The flashback shifted to the day after their meeting. Rachel had confessed her feelings to him, and he had gently let her down, telling her he was in a relationship with Sophia. But Rachel didn't give up. She kept pushing, asking him to meet up for a drink. Ethan had refused at first, but Rachel had pleaded with him, and he had eventually agreed. That night, they had gone out for drinks, and...Ethan's mind recoiled as he remembered waking up the next morning to find himself and Rachel naked in bed. He had been confused, angry, and regretful all at once. He had asked Rachel what had happened, and she had claimed they had gotten drunk and ended up in bed together. Ethan had been horrified, feeling like he had cheated on Sophia. The memories continued to flood his mind, and Ethan felt a wave of guilt wash over him. He had avoided Rachel after that, not knowing how to face her. But she had shown up at his office a few days later, pregnant. Ethan's mind reeled as he thought about the consequences of that night. He had married Rachel out of obligation, but their relationship was a sham. He felt trapped, and he didn't know how to escape. As the sun dipped below the horizon, Ethan finished his drink, feeling more lost than ever. What was he supposed to do now? Ethan's eyes welled up with tears as the memories overwhelmed him. He missed Sophia, the love of his life, and the thought of living without her was unbearable. He remembered the day he called her to break up, the pain in his voice as he told her he couldn't be with her anymore. His family and Rachel's family had forced him to marry Rachel, citing the Igbo tradition that a man must marry the woman he got pregnant. Ethan's body shook with sobs as he thought about the pain he had caused Sophia. He was still sipping his drink, his mind a mess of emotions. The whiskey burned his throat, but he couldn't feel it. All he could feel was the ache in his heart. Three months after the wedding, Rachel had suffered a miscarriage, losing the baby. Ethan's mind had gone numb, and he felt like he was just going through the motions. He didn't know how to process his emotions, didn't know how to deal with the guilt and regret that consumed him. As he sat by the pool, the stars twinkling above him, Ethan felt like he was drowning in his sorrow. He still had feelings for Sophia, and the thought of living the rest of his life with Rachel was suffocating him. He didn't know what the future held, but he knew he couldn't keep living like this. The pain was too much to bear. Sophia's heart sank as she heard the news about her mother's illness. She had always been close to her mother, and the thought of losing her was unbearable. She quickly arranged for her belongings and caught the next bus back to Lagos. As she arrived at her hometown, Sophia's anxiety grew. She rushed to her mother's house, her heart racing with worry. When she saw her mother, she was shocked. Her mother looked frail and weak, a shadow of her former self. Sophia's eyes welled up with tears as she hugged her mother tightly. "Mama, I'm here now. I'll take care of you," she whispered, trying to hold back her tears. The doctor's words echoed in her mind: "kidney problem." Sophia didn't know much about it, but she knew it was serious. She would do everything in her power to ensure her mother received the best care possible. As she settled into the hospital room, Sophia's mind began to wander. She thought about her life, her job, and Ethan. She wondered what he was doing, if he was happy. But most of all, she thought about her mother and how she was going to take care of her. The days that followed were a blur of hospital visits, medication, and caring for her mother. Sophia was exhausted, but she refused to give up. She was determined to be strong for her mother, to be there for her every step of the way. As the days turned into weeks, Sophia's mother began to show signs of improvement. The medication was working, and her condition was stabilizing. Sophia felt a sense of relief wash over her, but she knew it was far from over. Meanwhile, Ethan's life was still a mess. His marriage to Rachel was a sham, and he felt like he was living a lie. He knew he needed to make a change, but he didn't know where to start from. Sophia's eyes widened as she read the doctor's words on the prescription pad. "Surgery... 5 million naira..." She felt like she'd been punched in the gut. How was she going to raise that kind of money? She asked the doctor if there was any other way, but he shook his head. "I'm afraid not, ma'am....
