Walking over to Jeremiah, Cullis held out his hand for the clerk’s quill. Holding it by the nib, the prosecutor walked over to the basket and prodded the large feather through the grill in the top, and began to move it from side to side rapidly. From inside the basket, the cat began to spit and mewl even louder than before. The more the prosecutor tormented the poor creature the more agitated it became, until finally, it began hurling itself at the sides of its wicker prison, almost knocking the basket over in its fury. Cullis jumped back as if afraid the animal might escape and do him some serious harm. His action, once again, garnered an excitable response from the gathering.
