But the sudden realisation that her reason for living had been snatched away from her caused Esther to re-evaluate her position. All of a sudden, there was a rage growing within her that she had never felt before. A rage borne of anger, frustration and hate! She waited for a lull in her beating while Noah tried to catch his breath, and then she sprang up from the table and grabbed the poker from the hearth. Raising it above her head she brought it crashing down on her suitably astonished husband’s skull, over and over again, until finally he lay at her feet in a crumpled mass, dead. It took a moment for the realisation of what she had done to set in. That was when Esther started laughing! She slumped back down in her chair and laid her head in her hands until her laughter subsided.
