After dodging the police cruiser, we had to cover a few more blocks against the flow of exiting traffic. Clint was forced onto the sidewalk several times and narrowly missed taking out a mailbox to avoid a slow-speed, head-on collision. Darkness and streetlights are great equalizers, but the homes here still looked slightly less well cared for than the ones on the Spencers’ street. Nothing dramatic like cars on blocks with no engines, but there were occasionally items left scattered in yards, grass that looked a little longer, fewer trees, and landscaping that was simpler and utilitarian—covering defects rather than enhancing the living space.
