Exhausted from his first day at the hospital, Raven pulls up to the house trying to decide how to tell his companions about finding his mate and the wolf presence at the hospital. As he exits the car, he notices a police vehicle parked outside the house, making no effort to hide itself from view, or from the gossipy neighbours. He eyed the car and its occupant briefly before heading inside to ask if anyone knows why they are being watched before he makes a move. Taking one last look at the cop car he tries to get a good look at the officer, who in turn raised his hand in a wave to Raven. Clearly, he is now definitely aware that they are watching his house, and he needs to find out what is going on.
Walking through the door he hears voices coming from the kitchen and can hear dishes moving and food sizzling. Thankfully Val is an excellent cook, and she is here to help take care of us. The sounds of laughter and chatter from the three fills the air and Raven could not help but feel blessed that his sister and cousins came to stay here with him. This made it so he has his pack with him and is never separated from his family again. Entering the kitchen he took in the scene, Ethan and Emery seated at the island, having a beer, and talking to Val as she cooked dinner on the stove top. None of them realized that he was there right away, and he just watched them, acting like normal people, without all the heartache and worry. This is the life they all always should have had, but they had been robbed of it. Valkyrie had been robbed of learning about being an Alpha from our parents, they would never see him become a doctor, and never meet his mate. As he smiled at the image Emery got up to get another beer and saw Raven standing there.
“Raven, the doctor returns! How was your first day of saving lives?” Emery asked as the others turned to look at him as well, the question made Valkyrie smile at the thought of her brother saving those around him.
“No lives saved today, but I did meet some very important people. The Chief is a rogue, he knows your father, and he knew who I was before I got here. He chose me because of who I am.” He stopped and turned to Valkyrie, “and how was your first day of class?” He asked with a raised eyebrow. She looked at what she had cooking on stovetop briefly before putting the spoon down and turning to face him. She studied his face for a few seconds before she began to answer him. It was clear to him that she did not want to share the day with him, which also made it clear that the day would have some lasting impact on their return home. He could tell by the look on her face she was going to try and underplay what had clearly taken place, so before she could say anything he decided to share one last thing. “I should tell you that there is a police cruiser sitting outside the house currently, very clearly watching us. So please, just the truth of the day would be great.”
Valkyrie groaned at the mention of their being a cruiser outside, they had noticed it on their way home but had assumed that her lovely mate had just sent it to see where they were staying, not watch them all evening. She looked at Ethan and Emery quickly, who were suddenly much more interested in their hands than the conversation being had; clearly this one was up to her, which made sense as she is supposed to be the Alpha. “We met some important people as well, though I cannot say it went nearly as well as your day. We met two Alpha’s, both of which claimed we are on their land unannounced. Before you say anything, yes, I did try to keep my head, and no I did not start any fights. I ended them, but I did not start them.” She finished, with a definitive nod. Raven asked her what fights she had to end, as they were supposed to try and keep out of trouble for at least the first day. “The first Alpha, Thoren Prince, had the nerve to pull me out of class to threaten me and the second, Alpha Christian Salvatore, was just all types of sleazy. Ethan and Emery were fighting with Alpha Prince and his guys when I got to them for lunch, I ended the fight and sent everyone on their way.” It is clear something is being left out of the explanation of the day, as the twins looked at each other then at Valkyrie waiting to see what else she said.
“Val, you better share all of it now before it comes out later.” Ethan mumbled, which elicited a growl from his sister. He then turned to Raven to share what had clearly been omitted. “Val found her mate today, Alpha Thoren Prince, and it has not gone well. He pulled her out of class, and she got into it with him in the hall, and then when she came to break up the fight, she pushed him.” Raven looked between them all trying to take in everything that was being said. “When she pushed him, she was able to assert herself as a stronger Alpha, it could have just been that she caught him off guard, but he fell and looked as surprised as the rest of us.” Ethan finished. Now it all made sense, she emasculated an Alpha and now they are trying to keep an eye on her, as she should also be responding to the made bond and showing her submission but is not. Raven decided this is not the time to tell them about his new mate, as it would only complicated things, especially since she is not part of their world.
As Ethan finished his explanation of the day and everyone stood quietly contemplating what to do next Valkyrie huffed then walked to the front door and straight out. The three men followed her wanting to be there if she did something foolish, but also unsure of what she had planned. She strode right up to the police cruiser and said something to the officer quietly enough that none of them could hear her. She was speaking for about thirty seconds before she turned around, but as she did the officer instantly started the vehicle and sped away. He was down the street and around the corner before she even made it back to the house. The three guys followed her back into the house and to their original spots where she had gone back to cooking dinner without a word. Finally, Raven broke the silence asking what had just happened and all she said is, “I just very politely told that lovely officer that if his Alpha wants to keep an eye on me, he should be doing it himself, not putting someone else at risk. By sending someone else he has just proven he fears his own mate.” All said with a tone of indifference, but Raven knew that what she is really trying to do is instigate the Alpha into coming to them instead of her setting foot on his lands.
As dinner finished cooking everyone took a seat at the table and turned to the other topic that needed to be discussed. Valkyrie shared that she had met Oliver, a wolf from their original pack, and she had given him word that she is back to reclaim the Grace Pack lands. Raven looked at her dumbfounded, did she not understand that this is what had possibly caused part of the fight today? Openly stating she is here to split apart the strength of existing packs and declare yourself a rightful Alpha and challenger was never part of the plan. Stealth, intel, and time were what they had discussed. In a single day all their plans were out the window and now they had to figure out what they would do to make this work for them.
“Val, you can’t just go around declaring yourself and trying to steal pack members. We talked about being more strategic, being cleaver and quiet about all of this. How did you think the Alpha’s would respond when they heard you offer a home to all members of a dead pack, especially one that was as strong as ours? Especially when they thought we were all dead! Did you forget that we did not want to put that out there quite yet?” Raven scolds her, she may be his Alpha, but she is also still his younger sister.
“Oh, like you did so well with that today Rav… You do realize that if that rogue Chief of yours knew who you are then so do others. If he knew all about us, then we were already going to be figured out. At least I made sure they know we will not be bowing down to anyone that tried to kill us when we were kids. I will not apologize for taking the opportunity that I had in front of me, besides, I gave them an option. I said in three days any old members that wanted to return could meet us on the old running grounds. This would give them time to decide and us time to plan.” Valkyrie finished with an eye roll and a huff. She knew she had done what was needed for her pack, but she also knew Raven is right, she should have been more careful about how she had gone about things. Had she not said the offer in front of Thoren she would have appeared to be loss hostile and perhaps he would not see her as the threat he perceived her to be.
As day one ended on their new lives here none of them could imagine what would come next. The Grace siblings were both lost in thought about how to navigate their mate bonds for very different reasons. Raven needed to figure out how to bring his human mate into his world and make sure she could be kept safe, while also learning everything he could about how to woo a human. Valkyrie on the other hand needed to figure out how to deal with the massive ego of her own mate, which challenged her own very large ego, and decide what to do with this mate bond. She was not prepared to meet him yet and had not considered what this would mean for her journey to rebuilding the Grace Pack. Being an Alpha is in her blood and no part of her wanted to bow down to another, but the need for a mate is built into the soul of every wolf, even more so for an Alpha. The preservation of their blood lines and the need to maintain strength falls hand in hand with finding your mate and continuing the traditions of their kind. She knew she would need to sit down with her mate, and soon, so she could figure out what would come next.
Ethan and Emery sat in living room with the TV on watching some sports highlights in silence, both contemplating their cousins. They both knew that Raven was hiding something, but did not know what it could be as of yet; and they were concerned about Valkyrie and her show of strength today. “Should we tell her yet that we know what that was about?” Emery finally asks, breaking the silence. Ethan sighs before turning to his brother.
“We can’t, Dad said only to tell her once the pack was back together, not before. If we tell her now, she is going to freak out and everything will be lost.” Ethan responded. “Besides, for now she thinks she caught him off balance and that is for the best. Once the truth is out there everything becomes much more complicated.” Pausing briefly, he looked down at his hands and then back at his brother before asking him what had been on his mind. “Have you thought about what happens when we meet our mates, or mate? We have never really talked about it, but we have no idea if we will find just one mate for both of us or if we will each have our own.” Twin mates have always been a mystery, sometimes each twin has a mate of their own and sometimes they have one mate they share. There is never any way of knowing which way it will be, but generally if they each have their own the found mates are also twins. This concerned Ethan because while he had always enjoyed the attention and company of women, he had kept part of his identity hidden. He also knew that he enjoyed the company of other men, and secretly hoped his partner would be male. He knew once the mate bond kicked in it would not matter, but until then he could dream.
“I have though about it, but not a lot. One thing I know for sure, whoever they are, they will be lucky. Either they get two beasts to take care of them, or we each get to r****h our own beauty.” Emery said with a laugh. Ethan agreed, no matter what happened in the end it would be happiness for both. Today had at least set one thing straight, the brothers are officially both Beta’s, and could wear that badge of honour. Sharing such a role with your twin and best friend, as the right and left hand to your adopted sister is the best they could have ever hoped for. Finally, the twins headed to bed themselves and the day ended with a lot of questions, more than it had started with. One thing was for certain, in three days they would see if they had anyone left here and would need to prepare for that.
