The new Boss

The restructuring came without much warning, the way most changes at Aldergate Freight Solutions did. Management sent a company-wide email on a Tuesday morning announcing a new divisional head for Strategic Operations, the department Bill had quietly powered for four years. By Thursday, her name was the only thing anyone in the building wanted to discuss.

‎Elena Kovač walked into her first meeting with a composure that made people sit up straighter without being told to. Originally from Ljubljana, she was sharp in a way that didn't need to announce itself she asked the right questions, remembered names after hearing them once, and had clearly done her homework on every project running through the department, including the two Bill managed single-handedly.

‎"You're Bill," she said on her second day, stopping by his desk with a printed copy of his last quarterly report. "This is thorough work. I have questions, but they're good questions, not corrections."

‎It was a small thing to say, but Bill found himself replaying it that evening on the tram home, turning the sentence over the way he might inspect a report for typos. He told himself it was simply the relief of being recognized by someone whose standards were clearly high. Nothing more complicated than a hardworking man appreciating being seen

‎Over the following weeks, life at the office kept its familiar shape. Bill still arrived early, still left late, still handled small fires before they grew into anything Elena needed to worry about. If anything, he worked harder, sharper, more careful with every detail that crossed her desk. His performance did not go unnoticed. In the weekly meetings, she began directing more questions his way, trusting his judgment on calls that mattered.

‎Nothing had changed, Bill told himself. Everything was still going exactly the way it always had.
