37Josef walked through the alley to the back of Sara’s house. His white caftan hung loosely to his feet, covering a pair of red Chuck Taylor sneakers. Sara and Karim were asleep on beach chairs. Sara’s head was turned to the side, tiny gasps of breath escaping her lips. Karim was holding a bottle despite an angle that tempted gravity. “Is this how you dress in public?” Josef shouted from the foot of Sara’s chair. She batted her eyes open as she struggled to focus. “What public? We’re in my backyard. The only people that come back here are you or my father, when he can stumble home.” Josef yanked a tattered blanket from a wire strung between the house and a dead tree and tossed it on Sara. “Cover yourself!” She wrapped the blanket around her as she stepped close to Josef. “Relax Joey,”
