29Every time Tek got close enough to grab for Bull’s collar the dog skipped away. She’s playing with me, Tek thought, not enjoying the game. Whenever he eased in her direction Bull waited just long enough before dancing away again. Bull was twenty feet beyond Tek as she came to the driveway entrance of the housing development where cars whizzed by from both directions. She looked at him from the curb a moment before stepping into the road. “No!” Tek threw his arms in front of him though the dog was well out of reach. He lost sight of her, remaining on the curb, straining to see between passing cars and listening for the awful sound of screeching tires or worse.
