Amara's blood ran cold.
She couldn't move. She couldn't breathe. Her hand was still frozen on the laptop.
The man standing behind Adrian slowly stepped into the light.
No.
It couldn't be.
Amara's eyes widened until they burned. Her voice was nothing but a broken whisper.
"No..."
The man looked at her. Really looked at her. And then — he smiled.
It was a face she had seen a thousand times. In dreams. In memories. In the photographs she had finally hidden away in a box because looking at them hurt too much. A face she had spent three years trying to forget.
A face she was certain she would never see again in this life.
"Nathan?"
The room spun.
Nathan took another slow step forward, like he was afraid if he moved too fast she would shatter.
"Hello, Amara."
Her knees nearly gave way. She grabbed the edge of the desk just to stay standing.
"You're... you're alive..." The words felt foreign in her mouth.
Nathan's expression softened, and that softness broke her more than anything else.
"I told you I never left you."
Amara's head snapped to Adrian. Then back to Nathan. Her mind was short-circuiting, refusing to stitch this together.
"You knew," she whispered to Adrian, her voice shaking. "You both knew."
Adrian said nothing. His face was unreadable, a wall.
"You BOTH knew!"
Still nothing. That silence was worse than any lie.
And then shock turned into something else. Something hot and sharp.
"How long?" she demanded.
Nathan looked at Adrian, as if asking for permission. Adrian's eyes hardened into a warning.
That look — that secret look between them — was the final straw.
Amara noticed it.
"What are you hiding from me?"
Nathan took a deep breath, like he'd been holding this for years.
"The night I disappeared..." He paused, eyes never leaving hers. "Someone tried to kill me."
Amara froze.
"What?"
"I found out who was really behind your father's financial problems, Amara. Who was bleeding the company dry."
Her heart started pounding against her ribs.
"Who?"
Nathan's eyes met hers, steady and devastating.
"Someone inside your family."
She just stared at him. "No."
"I wish I were wrong," he said quietly, stepping closer. "God, I wish I were wrong."
Suddenly — RING.
Adrian's phone cut through the room. Harsh and loud.
He looked at the screen. And in an instant, his entire expression changed. The cold, controlled billionaire was gone. What was left was dangerous.
"What is it?" Amara asked.
Adrian answered. "Speak."
Amara couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but it was urgent, speaking fast. Adrian's face went dangerously, deathly cold.
"How long?" he asked.
He listened. Then his eyes, slowly, moved to Amara.
"Get everyone out of the house," he said into the phone.
He ended the call.
Amara's stomach dropped. "What happened? What was that call?"
Adrian walked straight toward her, purposeful. "We have to leave. Now."
"Why? Why do we have to leave?"
Before Adrian could answer —
The entire mansion went black.
The power cut. Complete darkness swallowed the room. The laptop screen was the only light left.
Then —
CRASH!
A window shattered downstairs. Glass exploding.
Amara gasped. Nathan reacted instantly, pulling her behind him, shielding her body with his own.
Adrian's hand went straight inside his jacket. Amara had never seen him move that fast.
Someone was inside the mansion.
And then a voice echoed up from downstairs, raw and terrified, screaming her name.
"AMARA!"
She knew that voice. She had known it since she was a little girl.
Her blood froze solid.
It was her father.
But something was terribly, terribly wrong. He wasn't calling her. He was warning her.
He was screaming —
"RUN!"
Then came a gunshot.
Amara screamed.
And in the darkness, with her father's scream still ringing in the house and footsteps rushing toward them, Adrian leaned down close to her ear and whispered the one sentence that changed everything:
"Now you know why I married you."
