The fire at the end of the driveway continued to burn.
Sophia stood motionless beneath the cold night sky, staring at the place where the black car had disappeared into the fog.
“My father,” she whispered again.
Alessandro stood beside her, his weapon still in his hand.
“Sophia, we need to leave.”
She barely heard him.
“My father is alive.”
“You don't know that.”
“I saw him.”
“You saw someone in a car.”
“I know my father.”
Her voice cracked.
“I know the way he moves. I know the way he waves. He used to wave at me exactly like that when I was a child.”
Isabella approached them slowly.
Her face was pale.
“Daniel could be alive,” she said.
Sophia turned toward her.
“You knew.”
Isabella froze.
“You knew he might still be alive.”
“I didn't know.”
“But you suspected.”
Isabella looked away.
Sophia stepped closer.
“Mom, please. No more secrets.”
For a moment, Isabella said nothing.
Then she whispered, “Your father discovered something before he disappeared.”
“What?”
“The Black Circle.”
Sophia's heart tightened.
“That's what Marco is after.”
“No,” Isabella replied.
She looked toward the burning vehicle.
“Marco is only one part of it.”
Before Sophia could ask what she meant, Alessandro interrupted.
“We don't have time.”
Sophia looked at him.
“Where are we going?”
“The cathedral.”
Isabella's eyes widened.
“No.”
Alessandro turned toward her.
“Marco took Elena there.”
Sophia's stomach dropped.
“My sister?”
Isabella closed her eyes.
“The old Moretti cathedral.”
“Then we're going.”
“No, Sophia.”
Her mother grabbed her arm.
“You don't understand what is beneath that cathedral.”
Sophia pulled away.
“Then tell me.”
Isabella hesitated.
“I can't.”
Sophia's expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
She looked between them.
“My father is alive. Elena has been kidnapped. Marco knows things about my family that I don't know, and now you're telling me there's something beneath an old cathedral.”
She took a breath.
“I am done being kept in the dark.”
Alessandro watched her silently.
Then he nodded.
“She comes with us.”
Isabella looked at him.
“Alessandro—”
“She has a right to know the truth.”
Sophia stared at him.
For a moment, she felt grateful.
But Elena's warning returned to her mind.
**TRUST NO ONE.**
She pushed the thought away.
They hurried toward the waiting vehicle.
---
The drive to the cathedral was silent.
Fog covered the road as Alessandro drove through the outskirts of the city.
Sophia sat in the back seat, staring through the window.
Her father's voice continued to echo in her mind.
*Your family is descended from the original founder.*
Who was the founder?
Why had her father disappeared?
And why did Marco believe Elena was so important?
Sophia touched the silver pendant around her neck.
She had found it on the floor after Elena was taken.
It had belonged to her sister.
Something about it felt important.
She turned it over in her fingers.
There was a tiny symbol engraved on the back.
A circle.
And inside the circle was a strange crown.
“What's this?” she asked.
Isabella looked at it.
Her expression changed immediately.
“Where did you get that?”
“Elena's.”
Isabella stared at the pendant.
“Put it away.”
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
Sophia frowned.
“That symbol means something.”
Isabella remained silent.
Alessandro glanced at the rear-view mirror.
“It is the symbol of the Black Crown.”
Sophia looked at him.
“The Black Crown?”
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
“Your mother should have told you.”
Isabella whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
“The truth.”
Sophia looked from one to the other.
“What is the Black Crown?”
Neither answered.
The cathedral suddenly appeared through the fog.
Sophia's breath caught.
It was enormous.
Its stone walls were cracked and covered in vines. Several statues stood around the entrance, their faces worn away by time.
The windows were dark.
The entire building looked abandoned.
But Sophia knew someone was inside.
Alessandro stopped the vehicle.
“Stay behind me.”
Sophia opened the door.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I said stay behind me.”
“And I said no.”
She stepped out.
“My sister is in there.”
Alessandro sighed.
“Then don't make me protect you and fight at the same time.”
Sophia almost smiled.
“Then don't.”
They walked toward the cathedral.
The enormous doors opened before anyone touched them.
Sophia stopped.
“Did you do that?”
Alessandro shook his head.
“No.”
Isabella whispered:
“They knew we were coming.”
They entered.
---
The inside of the cathedral was colder than the night outside.
Their footsteps echoed across the stone floor.
There were no candles.
No people.
Nothing.
Sophia whispered, “Where is everyone?”
Alessandro raised his gun.
“Marco wouldn't leave the place unguarded.”
They moved deeper into the cathedral.
Then Sophia saw it.
A large black circle carved into the stone wall behind the altar.
She walked toward it.
Isabella grabbed her shoulder.
“Don't touch it.”
Sophia turned.
“Why?”
“Because that symbol is older than the Moretti family.”
Alessandro examined the carving.
“There has to be a mechanism.”
He ran his hand along the stone.
A small click sounded.
The floor beneath the altar moved.
Sophia stepped backward.
A hidden staircase appeared.
Cold air rushed upward from the darkness.
Isabella whispered:
“The crypt.”
Sophia stared down the stairs.
“Elena is down there.”
Alessandro nodded.
“We find her and get out.”
They descended.
The staircase seemed endless.
With every step, the temperature dropped.
At the bottom was a long corridor.
Black wooden doors lined both sides.
Each door had a name engraved into it.
Sophia walked slowly.
Then she stopped.
Her heart nearly stopped beating.
One door carried a name she knew better than anyone.
**DANIEL WILLIAMS.**
“My father.”
She reached for the handle.
Alessandro caught her wrist.
“Wait.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“We don't know what's behind it.”
“I don't care.”
She pulled her hand free and opened the door.
The room was filled with photographs.
Sophia.
Elena.
Isabella.
Daniel.
There were pictures of Sophia as a child.
Sophia at school.
Sophia walking through the city.
Sophia entering the Moretti estate.
Some photographs had been taken only days ago.
Sophia stepped backward.
“Someone has been watching me.”
Alessandro looked around the room.
“Not someone.”
He pointed to a wall.
“An organization.”
Hundreds of names were written there.
Some were crossed out.
Others had dates beside them.
Sophia noticed one name.
**DANIEL WILLIAMS — MISSING.**
She touched the writing.
“He was here.”
Isabella's voice trembled.
“Yes.”
Sophia turned.
“You knew this place existed.”
Isabella nodded.
“I came here once with your father.”
“When?”
“Fifteen years ago.”
Sophia's eyes widened.
“The night he disappeared?”
Isabella didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Suddenly, a voice came from the corridor.
“You shouldn't have come.”
They turned.
A tall man stood in the doorway.
He was dressed in a long black coat.
Sophia recognized him from an old photograph.
She looked at Isabella.
Her mother's face had gone completely white.
“Who is he?”
Isabella whispered:
“Gabriel.”
The man smiled.
“Gabriel Williams.”
Sophia's heart raced.
“Williams?”
He nodded.
“Your father's brother.”
Sophia stared at him.
“My uncle?”
“Yes.”
“But you're dead.”
Gabriel gave a quiet laugh.
“That was the story your father wanted everyone to believe.”
Alessandro raised his gun.
“Where is Elena?”
Gabriel looked at him.
“She is alive.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“Where?”
“Not far.”
“Take me to her.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You have your father's courage.”
“I said take me to my sister.”
Gabriel studied her carefully.
“You still don't understand why you're here.”
“Then explain it.”
He walked past them and stopped beside the black circle carved into the wall.
“The Black Circle was never about money.”
Sophia frowned.
“Marco said it was about power.”
“Money is only a tool.”
Gabriel turned toward her.
“The Black Circle was created to protect something much more valuable.”
“What?”
“Blood.”
Sophia felt a chill.
“What blood?”
“Yours.”
Silence filled the corridor.
Sophia shook her head.
“That makes no sense.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Your ancestor founded the organization.”
“Who?”
“Jonathan Williams.”
Sophia's eyes widened.
“My ancestor?”
“Yes.”
He looked at the pendant around her neck.
“And he left behind something called the Black Crown.”
Sophia touched the pendant.
“What is it?”
Gabriel's expression became serious.
“A network powerful enough to change governments, control fortunes and destroy anyone who threatens it.”
Sophia swallowed.
“Why does Marco want Elena?”
“Because she carries the Moretti bloodline.”
“And me?”
Gabriel stared directly into her eyes.
“You carry the bloodline that created it.”
Sophia's heart pounded.
Before she could respond, a scream echoed through the crypt.
“Elena!”
Sophia ran toward the sound.
Alessandro followed.
They reached a large black door.
Sophia grabbed the handle.
A voice came from inside.
“Sophia!”
It was Elena.
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
“Elena!”
She opened the door.
Her sister stood in the center of a dark chamber.
But a gun was pressed against her head.
Sophia froze.
The man holding the weapon stepped into the light.
Her heart dropped.
She knew him.
He had stood beside Alessandro.
He had protected the Moretti family.
He had earned their trust.
And now he was pointing a gun at Elena.
Alessandro's face hardened.
“You.”
The traitor smiled.
“I'm afraid so.”
“Let her go.”
“Not yet.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“Why are you doing this?”
The man's eyes moved to her.
“Because your family took everything from mine.”
“What did we take?”
He smiled coldly.
“The truth.”
Sophia stared at him.
“What do you want?”
He pointed at the pendant around her neck.
“That.”
Sophia's fingers tightened around it.
“What is it?”
The traitor laughed.
“The key.”
Suddenly, every light in the chamber came alive.
Screens appeared on the walls.
On each screen was the same symbol.
A black circle.
Then a message appeared.
**WELCOME, SOPHIA WILLIAMS.**
Sophia stared at the words.
The traitor leaned toward Elena.
“You finally came home.”
Sophia's blood ran cold.
She looked at Alessandro.
Then at her mother.
Then at the stranger holding her sister.
And for the first time, she understood.
The cathedral had never been a place where Elena was being held prisoner.
It was a place where Sophia was meant to be brought.
She was the real target.
And somewhere in the darkness beneath the cathedral, the Black Crown was waiting for her.
