Chapter 71–Nadine’s POV
We were already seated at the restaurant eating quietly when I noticed Ashton.
He wasn’t eating. He wasn’t holding any spoon to make an attempt to eat. He wasn’t even paying attention to me. His gaze was fixed somewhere beyond the walls, distant and troubled, and I could tell immediately that something had his mind completely elsewhere.
“Hey,” I said softly, reaching out to tap his shoulder.
No response.
“Hey!” I tried again, a little louder this time. My hand came down lightly on his arm, and he blinked, shaking himself out of the daze.
“Oh… sorry,” he said, his voice distant, as if he had been submerged in some deep, invisible current pulling him under.
I leaned closer to him. “What is it? What’s wrong? You’ve been lost this entire time.”
He shook his head
